    Trying to get an ID on it.

    White oak of some sort. Smells like whiskey when its fresh cut/split. Great firewood if you dry it multiple years. Get it all!

    It’s not quite the star performer it’s brother Red Oak is, but it’s great BTU wood that usually splits fairly easy. It can be stringy at times almost like hickory.

    Currently I have a little over 1/2 chord of red oak. I don’t have any white oak so looking to burning this in a couple of years.
    I was able to get 24-28 rounds today. Probably about a 1/2 a face chord.

    :BrianK: Better give it 3 years at least and 4+ if the splits are larger. The stuff is a long term, one of the longest, term woods to season.

    I’m assuming he meant the other way around. First time I’ve ever heard anyone try to say red oak is betterer than White. Either way pass the :popcorn:

    The only way I can think of RO being "better" than WO is maybe in slightly faster drying...might have been a fluke, but I've had 3 year CSS WO that still sizzled and steamed! :hair:

    Has to do with the tyloses clogging the pores. The same thing that makes white oak more drought tolerant and the lumber more weather proof makes it dry slower. That same substance makes them much more resistant to the wilt as well. To me it’s worth the wait.

    This white oak was cut by mistake. So alive and green. Guess it will be 2025 before I can give it a burn

    Hold on now...Hear me out y'all.

    I didn't say White Oak wasn't a star performer, just that it wasn't quite the star performer its brother Red Oak was.

    Kind of like saying one Klitschko brother is better than the other, they're both great, but one is better. White Oak is an excellent choice, just not as good overall as Red Oak. Red Oak is more readily available to most people, grows larger, splits easier (I’ve had some real stringy White Oak), seasons slightly quicker, straighter branches to process, etc. I do think White Oak has more BTU’s. I’m not the only one who feels this way. I think we all need to reflect back and recall this poll WE ALL had opportunity to vote in friends. Red Oak not only beat out White Oak, it beat SBH (which was robbed in the first round), Black Locust, Rock/Sugar Maple, Ash, and all the other hard hitting favorites.

    Black Locust and the like have gotten all the love in years past...its time we bring back the true king.
