Thought maybe I would ask. I use to work in the coal industry for over twenty years until the company I worked for relocated. After that I went into a job that pretty much has me indoors and mostly confined to a desk. I have gain probably thirty pounds in the past two years. I’m 45 now and losing this weight isn’t easy like it use to be. What have you guys had success with? When I can I get out split wood, work around the house and things but I have to figure someway to pull these pounds off.

Hey Perry long jr I have tried the Adkins Diet (low carb) twice. Both times I was able to lose over 20lbs and kept it off for over a year. The problem with a low carb diet is being able to adhere to that diet plan for the long term, meaning years. A year ago, I started a modified intermittent fasting diet which I am still on. I have lost around 25lbs since Christmas 2020. The way it works is you can eat a reasonable meal two times a day and fast completely between those two meals (no snacks ever). My diet plan is no breakfast, a noon meal, and a evening meal with absolutely no snacks. It was hard for the first month to get into a routine but after that initial start the dieting started working wonders and my daily eating habits became very easy to obtain. No carb or calorie counting ever, just eat two reasonable meals and fast in between.
So, after 14 months and minus 25 pounds later I am a believer in intermittent fasting. It works for me! :flipeggs:

Hey Eggshooterist Basicly I'm on the same 18 hour fast except I elect to reduce my carb/sugar intake to help prevent hunger cravings. Also during the six hour window for eating I do not snack, I believe (for myself) this also helps to curve hunger cravings. Could be in my head, but it seems to work.

    I also lost weight (at 46) on intermittent fasting, 8 & 16.
    Added to that fast:
I cut back on carbs daily basis, to include cerial grains, creamers (high lactose
I started drinking water, not to polish off a certain amount, but to just be constantly drinking
Part of my fasting time was at night....I slept better. And in the morning i did any exercise I could....walking, a slower bike ride, splitting wood....in a fasted state.

From my higher intensity cycling days, I learned that high intensity work outs (say 80% max heart rate and up) burned muscle unless one was carb loading and eating constantly....and that low intensity exercise, like walking, could burn fat, as that could metabolize and be used at that rate.

    Go for it.

I'll give you the absolute proven way. It worked on military officers when they had to be in some semblance of shape. It sucks, but if you are a capable person with self control it will work.

Burn more than you take in.............that is it. You will still lose weight slower than when you were a younger working man. It worked and still works every time.

Thank you bud. I've done wt watchers and Atkins with success but they are both hard to live with long term. The fasting is easier than either for me. Once weather brakes we will be back out on the rail trails pedaling our buts off. That always helps. We ride indoor all winter but I've had a rough one with the weather ups and down this winter. 4 neck and one lower back surgery and a bipolar mother nature don't mix well lol.

Hey Sirchopsalot I also force down all the water I can during the day. I have started drinking lemon water (with no sugar) this seems to help on hunger cravings. Another helpful tool is Apple Cider Vinegar (which contains the "mother"), one tablespoon of ACV with 8 onces of water twice a day seems to help with gut digestion and hunger pains. Again, all of this may just be in my head, but I can't argue with the results I'm having.

Thanks for the comments, I definitely got to do something. Being committed will be key no doubt. It gives you motivation to hear these stories from guys that are like me. I think the atkins and fasting is something I need to try. I’m just flat out miserable being at this weight. I weigh about 270 and need to be around 215 or 220.

I did keto for over a year. I lost over 25 lbs (iirc it was 26), I did the weekend cheat with carbs deal, but was vigilant during the week on under 50 grams of carbs a day max.

It worked, but it's really hard to do long term. All diets are this way.
I gained about 15 lbs back, very slowly over the last couple of years after I stopped keto dieting.
I like carbs and I like drinking beer. That's not going to change.

I started working out with a trainer, focusing on working on my core strength at our company gym. I'm actually gaining weight, slightly, but getting stronger from working out, so I'm fine with that.

I guess what I'm getting at is you can use diets to lose weight, but most are pretty difficult to maintain for long periods of time. I've seen so many people go on all sorts of diets, especially those with special prepared foods, only ending up gaining all the weight back and sometimes even more after they stop those diets. Some of those diets had people losing 8-15 lbs a week. That's not healthy, and any diet where you are losing more than 3 lbs or so a week are dangerous.

Moderation is probably the best thing, along with excercise if you want to lose weight and generally be healthier. Obviously if you love fast food or something that is really bad for you, the best thing is probably to actually stop eating that, but if you like it, your body will crave it.

I've never done well with diets. I did used to fast some but after having some big stomach problems mt doctor warned me to not do that any more. Besides I have to take medicine and that would not go well with fasting.

The thing that worked best for me is riding bicycle. However, one needs to ride long and steady rather than just pedaling slow. Also one needs to ride at least 5 days per week and I try to not ride less than 20 miles per ride but most rides are 35 miles with some long rides (50-100) every so often. That will beat the fat off.

That’s been my viewpoint for a longtime as well. Most people I know that have lost a bunch weight have never been able to stay with the diet long term. I know woman that has counted calories for years now and has been successful with keeping it. She eat whatever but when she reaches the 1300 calorie mark for the day that it. That would be tough for sure.

I find that the less I do the more I eat and vice versa.
