Just a thought on dead batteries. My boat battery went out a few weeks ago, it was long past needing replacement. It's just a 50HP 2 stroke jon boat, we were on the ramp to launch it, and the battery quickly drained to nothing. The 10 degree temps didn't help. My friend happened to have a small lithium jump starter, he handed it to me, and this thing is only about 4 inches by 7 inches. I look at it and am thinking you've gotta be kidding me. I hooked it up, and the motor started up first turn of the key. I was impressed. He said it's rated to jump start a diesel with 2 batteries. I bought one right after that fishing trip, it will even recharge my phone if needed. It takes up next to no space in the car or truck
I have one similar to this. It starts my 5.8 liter 351 cubic inch V8 ski boat instantly. It will start up to a 5.5 liter diesel, and like a 7.5 liter gas engine. Things like lawnmowers, ATVs etc are nothing for this to jump. Best $60 I spent, pretty much ever. I think they are a little more now though. One that will start a motorcycle or ATV are the size of a cell phone, case and all. This one is about 4-5 big cell phones though and the same footprint, but the case is a little bulky like 4.5" tall by 8" long and 4.5" wide. It easily fits in my center console of my truck, so it goes everywhere with me. What sold it for me was a review. A guy had a newer V8 gm truck and was at Minneapolis airport after coming back from a trip. It was during a polar vortex and his battery was frozen, and it was like -30°. He pulled the jump pack out, started his truck like it was nothing. That start only drained like 2% from it. He went on to find several other motorists on that lot that had dead batteries. He started all of them with his jump pack alone. It was like 6 4cylinder cars and 2 v6's and his truck, and he still had over 70% left on the pack. That's a possible life saver, and at worst a time headache saver.
It's amazing what they're doing with this kind of technology these days. I paid about $95 for mine at Walmart, I bought it on the way home from that trip, along with a new battery. It was almost an impulse buy, because I didn't do my usual comparison shopping. The review that sold you is quite a testament for it, starting all those vehicles and still 70% left in the tank.
This is the new version of mine. The flashlight is bigger. It's $95. TACKLIFE Jump Starter T8 Pro 1200A peak 18000mAh 12V Up to 7.5L Gas, 6L Diesel Engine. . Here's one about the size of a cell phone, case included. Says it can start a 5.0 V8. So perfect for a motorcycle or ATV. Plus all the charging cables for phones, and a light even. This one would even fit under the passenger seat on my sport bike, or in the ATV underseat storage.
That Tacklife looks nicer than my Schumacher, even if they bail you or someone else out once it's worth it. I was thinking about how you said it would start your 5.8 ski boat. We have a 4.3 V6 in our ski boat, and it would be great to have this on board. Every year we encounter people broke down, and sometimes it's us. I carry jumper cables, but I would feel a lot better not jumping from my battery. I won't leave anyone stranded.
Sounds like you got a good battery, most of todays batteries are made in the same plant and just rebadged. Like some said earlier they don’t make them like they use to. It’s all about profit. Batteries have should went up in price in the past five years.
It's not that bad. Affordable DIY tools available to do it too. All you're really doing is telling the car software that the battery is now new and that it's either a flooded or AGM type. The car then adjusts it's charging behavior appropriately for the age and type of battery. While all that sounds more complicated than it has to be, it's probably why the battery in my 2011 is original (although it is near done at this point) in addition to it being located in the trunk, away from engine heat/vibration, and water intrusion. Jump start access terminals located under the hood though. Was originally a Cleveland car and our SC summers are hard on batteries, so don't give me any grief about being in the South vs Northern winters! Nice of BMW to give us a break on replacement battery expenses so we could save up for the necessary suspension components!
