you can do it both ways. It tucks in nicely between most saws bar and felling dogs, or you can mark first then remove and buck. Personally I use it on a small limbing saw. I start at the base of the trunk and mark rounds out until I get to the limbs. Then I remove it limb the tree out. Then I switch to a bigger saw and cut everything else.
This is how I use the stick: 1. I stick it perpendicular to the bar. So if I'm on the left side of the log that is down, I stick the stick to the left of the bar. 2. Then I put the washer and catch the end of the log, then I just cut a notch in the log at 16". 3. Next I shift to my right, stick the washer into the cut I just made, and make the next cut, and so on and so forth down the line until I'm done. I do not put the stick parallel to the bar ever and once I'm done marking the log and ready to cut, then I take it off and buck away.
Never said I put it parallel to the bar. The magnet tucks in between the bar and felling spikes if you want to leave it on while you buck a log. Stick is still perpendicular.
I do end up with a few real shorts, 4-6" range. I throw them in the truck and when split those go on top of the stacks and are bonus for people buying quantities. An 8-9" round when split will make a facsimile of a regular split, just put two together when stacking. Sometimes the shorts get chucked in the wood with other uglies.
Ah ha! I thought you misunderstood me.......but it turns out *I* misunderstood *you*! My apologies. Thanks for clearing that up.
Here's what I use. It's a t handle with a bingo dabber hose clamped onto one end. My stick is 16" and I just walk down the log marking dots and then let er' rip. Fast and cheap. Non-toxic.
