Do what he did. Which is 1% of the time. Because if it's a huge round I probably halved or quartered it to keep from wrestling it.

 

But I split decent size rounds from my sitting position.

 

If that works for you, that's all that matters. It's not for me, and yes I've tried it more than once. Last time was thee last time.

 

I like that idea. I think I will make one. It seems that the rounds will be easier to move around on nice smooth rounded steel rather than digging into the dirt. I'm going to make mine with a little cutout around the existing base plate so the round will totally be supported by the new base plate. My hats off to you sir.
p.s.- I also use knee pads when splitting vertical-much easier on the knees.

 

I used a piece of pressure treated 2x12 as a “porch” for mine for a long time.
