It was 36 degrees today, and I headed out to the woods. I had recently gotten a new helmet, and I was looking forward to trying it out. Turns out that earmuffs are underrated. I had an old red oak deadfall in mind. The bark had fallen off and the sapwood had rotted away, but the heartwood was still solid. How it started: How it went: How it ended:

Nice get! I just bought the same helmet this past fall and used it a bunch before I got the chance to install the muffs. So you're saying you like those? I've become very accustomed to wearing the squishy foam ear plugs (after 26 years in printing) so they are my go to. One of the reasons is because they really block out noise (NRR32). I'm set up now with the face shield and muffs so I hope to try it this weekend.
From the title, you'd think this oak was literate! All sledded out of the woods using manpower. I was only maybe 50 yards and downhill, so no great trek. It did take a bit to trim enough brush to get the sled through, though. I've got my eye on two big oaks that are down about fifty yards further in, but they're further down the hill and I think I can sled them out on the edge of a swamp. I'll probably pack snowshoes though, as the snow likes to drift up along the edge of the cattails. I ordered the helmet from Amazon, but it came from Bailey's: I think these muffs might be tuned to saw frequency. At least they seemed to block out the saw more than other noises. I've never worn any hearing protection before (yeah, dumb), and for me it was much more comfortable and relaxing not to have the saw screaming for an hour.
Just looked up the rating, out of curiosity. It's NRR25 (a weighted), so not quite as quiet as my plugs. I'll try 'em and if it's not sufficient, I'll double up and wear both. I like the idea of easily being able to left them up and back off the ear.
I'll have to look at Amazon. The link didn't work on my fon. My Kask Arb helmet is vented and it really does help but it vhas no visor and I try to save it for when I'm up a tree. And , I kinda gather hard hats That's a good jag of wood for sledding by hand !!
I was required to wear hearing protection at the start of my printing career and got use to wearing Laser Lites. They are super quiet and don't bother me one bit to wear. I even put them in to mow and weed wack amd even while riding motorcycle.
