    How about 4yr +?

I know others have wood CSS'd that's older. But, seeing this put a smile on my face.

I was moving wood to the deck earlier. I was pulling from a stack dated 11/18
    IMG_20220206_093228.jpg

Then I realized I had stacked a split with a different date.
    IMG_20220206_093232.jpg

Never saw it until I went to take a pic.
    IMG_20220206_093220.jpg

    A few courses apart.

I wonder how many more are like that, that's not dated. I don't date every split. I must have been consolidating racks 3+ yes ago.

I do this as well. It's my version of a photographic memory. Because my actual memory isn't that good.

That should be a real treat to burn. Last winter I had acquired some 4 year old red oak from a buddy who was moving and let me raid his older stacks. Wonderful stuff. I don't mark my splits, mostly because I have a digital record of when I did what right here on this wonderful site :)

Pleasant surprise. Makes for a sweet fire for sure! I have a good idea when most of mine was CSS and will date only the multi year stacks.

This is how I keep track.
Piles are the tanish blocks. They contain the number of cord (in the little box), the source and part of the year split and stacked, and the year they can be first used. 98% is oak with maple here and there.

    Excel spreadsheet.

I’m in the pictures to date club as well. When I’m shuffling the deck so to speak, I get an occasional armload that is 5+ years old. Since then, I’ve begun to crib stack to keep wood separated so I’ll no longer have that happening.

I'm pretty new to wood burning, so far my stacks are easy to keep track of. But, I do have a couple spots that have wood blended together from different years, and for those spots I place rope between the splits to tell them apart. I have a lot of ropes from years of boating. I need to mark them as well, so I can find a time capsule years from now.

My problem is I don't take enough pictures. I need to work on that. It would really help.
I like the idea of some sort of map as well that has the dates on it.

I take pics as well. Have a dedicated woodpile pic file on phone. I like when I get a "this date _ years ago" remembrance slide show and its pics of stacks.

Take lots of pictures, post here plus keep them in files by year and date on DropBox. Not fool-proof but close enough.

I've never done anything to record when something was done but this year for the first time I have just a little bit of wood that I'm not sure when it was done.

However, with our GTG I do have some reference. The year 2017 was the first year the guys really made an effort to stack wood. The stack in the picture was or is being burned this winter. There will be more from that year for next winter.
    101_0597.JPG

The oak Scotty Overkill took down that year will be mostly burned up by spring.
    101_0619.JPG

But the GTGs are noted for many things and not all related to firewood. Sometimes we've made lumber.

And of course everyone has to eat!

Looks awesome. Unfortunately, nothing that old in my stacks.

I used to mark stacks but was never consistent with it and didn't keep up with it because for a long time, I was only cutting enough annually to fill my 7-cord woodshed. Once I started getting farther ahead, I was then using pictures for a while to track my stacks. I finally just made a rough diagram in PowerPoint to keep track of everything. Doesn't have to be fancy and the layout doesn't make any sense to anyone that doesn't know how my stacks are laid out on my property, but it makes sense to me. I can look at the diagram and also know the quantity of each stack. There are around 13 1/2 cords+ out there with just over 5 cords still left in the woodshed (the 19/20 mix square). I need to get cracking as I would like to keep at least 20 cords on hand (depending on the species of wood burned, that would give me a 4–5-year stash for average years and a 3-year stash for bad years). I don't track chunk/cookie bins as those usually get burned during the next year's SS.

I put a date on all my stacks of wood only when the stack is completed.
Right now, I have some wood that I am burning that is 5 years old. And yes, it does burn good.
