Here's part of my lumber hoarding. I cut 2X4 sections into little pieces. A couple of these on my 1/4 SuperCedar bits, and I'm good to light any other cordwood....even snow covered pieces coming from outside. I have 7 bins full. Enough for 2 or 3 years. Have more 2X4 wood to cut, but at some point, hoarding to excess makes no sense, and it's a waste of storage bins. I like my kindling living indoors. First year, I'd take my sticks from piles outside, but when they were wet, it was awful.
I have probably close to 1 p/u load of kindling total. The total amount don't go down very much cause I'm always replacing what is used to start the daily fires.Several 20 & 30 gallon lidded trash cans outside here in town, several cardboard boxes inside garage/shop + 3 lidded 55 gallon steel barrels outside at parents acreage.I save the inside stuff for when its raining or there's snow covering outside. When its dry I gather any fallen twigs & corncobs first before they are wet or buried.Plus always have plenty of scrap wood from jobsite dumpsters,my shop & slivers from splitting also.Nothing gets wasted. When I need some space I give a couple boxes to family or friends instead of throwing it in trash bin.
I gotta get a pic of my kindling rack for you guys. I may be way behind on the cord wood stacks, but kindling wise I'm a Don Kindleon. There's a local manufacturer that lays up big blocks of kiln dried aspen, then resaws them into about 1/4"x12"x48" sheets. You can drive by the factory on any given day and there will be 20+ bales sitting outside of those sheets free for the taking. One bale will plug the bed of my 3/4t diesel dodge, and probably is overweight. I go get one of those a couple times a year and rack it in my shop. I use my bandsaw to cut 'em down to 12" lengths. No need for any starter material, it catches if it even sees a match coming.
I've got 3 or 4 banana boxes full of kindling, but with dry wood, it's pretty much unneeded. I used some back in the middle of Sept., and got a nice fire going that lasted a whole 20 minutes.
View attachment 3147 Being a firewood hoarder consists of all different kinds of wood hoarding. Even if you don't need kindlin, does this mean you shouldn't have it anyway?
Nice. I have one of those kindling boxes too. Really a treat compared to the old way of doing things with crumpled paper.
Only difference is mine all came wrapped. Not sure if it's easier. Keeps the mess inside the plastic when breaking apart by hand.
My basement is full of plastic bins full of kindling. I'm a bit nervous to have an entire basement stacked with bone dry kindling next to 700 gallons of oil. I keep them in the plastic bins, not sure how much protection that will offer.
I like it. The storage bins are awesome...keeps the mess contained. Stackable and organized. I like the clear ones.
