Split preference?

In the past I've been split (no pun intended) between quarter and rectangular shaped splits. After recently changing my routine for overnight burns, I find myself favoring rectangular. Of course you're always going to end up with some of each, but you can trim rounds favoring one or the other. How do you prefer your splits?

 

I try for rectangles also and end up with mostly blocks and some edge pieces and of course triangle splits on smaller pieces. Also am splitting larger pieces once I got two years ahead.

 

I like to have some of both.

 

Rectangular for sure when I can make them, stack better in the stove & the racks.

 

Don’t be leaving out the rhombus, trapezoid, parallelogram, and circle shaped pieces. They’ll burn too

 

I prefer the rectangular splits.

I don't care. I usually split wood according to the size and not the shape.

 

If it fits it ships. However I like a thin piece to slid up on top of the pre-work feeding of the smoke dragon

 

You’re right, can’t forget the dysfunctional side of the family, they need love too!

 

Oh yeah, gotta love the slender ones too. Load them up before too much gets stacked in front of them.

I split whatever works best for the round I have on the splitter, least amount of work and try to randomize it.

"randomize" is a good word. One nice thing about splitting mid season, the size and shape splits that have worked out the best are fresh in your mind. I have a lot of large splits in my stacks that I end up trimming some down so they cram in the stove better.

 

I prefer square-ish splits over triangular.

 

I prefer square but don't go to great lengths to get them.

 

Rectangle. Now what’s the perfect size rectangle?

 

I always go by the golden ratio. Divine mathematics is paramount here. I'll split a piece height wise, then keep planing the width down until it's exactly 1.618033988749894 times the height. I verify each dimension with vernier calipers so I know I'll have the perfect pieces both in the stack and in the stove.

 

I enjoy working each round into what ever shape I need at the time for the stack. I bring the rounds to the stack with the splitter and as you can see make what ever shape I need at the moment. It’s like building a puzzle and makes the task EVEN more fun if that’s at all possible .

 

Whatever way it splits it’s good for me I make some large splits for the overnights and cold ones
