What causes this?

    This is by some ponds (old gravel pits). Something really liking the bark. Not sure I've ever saw this before. It is all freshly done. The tracks were no clue.

    One more vote for porcupine. Do you have any fisher cats in your area? They keep the porcupines in check.

    looks like porky work to me also , after i blew the pictures up and could see a couple foot prints.

    I too thought Porcupine. I guess those trees will make gooder firewood.

    Porkies are the only thing I can come up with but I've never seen them do this. In addition, we have never had porkies in this area and the nearest porkies are a long distance from here. We also don't have fishers. The only place I know with fishers is in the UP.
    Probably 1/4 mile.

    That's 100% a porkie putting in work on that tree. You'll rarely, if ever, see one. I know we have them around here but have yet to see one in the wild.

    I seen trees chewed by porkiepines 30-40' up. They are definitely climbers.

    Went back there hoping to find some fresh tracks but none. Looked for other trees with damage but found none. Looked on my place too as we have lots of soft maple and thankfully found nothing. Just for kicks I did put out a couple trail cams.
