Looks like some primo stuff. Do you ever see yourself only cutting BL? You love it so much and don’t seem to have a problem finding it. May as well make it your sole focus?:yes:I wish I had access to more here!

I see why you left the spar. That's a nasty looking poison ivy vine! Between the resprouts, poison ivy, green ivy, and spar the whole ensemble looks like an angry mother that ran outside in a bathrobe, arms waving in the air, curlers in her hair, screaming like a lunatic

Its called "locust mania" jo191145 was the first Connecticut hoarder "diagnosed" and now Eric Schamell and myself have it as well. Seems to have isolated itself to this state luckily.

All kidding aside i could see myself hoarding a few select species and getting premium prices for them. I have a few spots for dead/down BL as well as green, BUT most are not easy to retrieve. Problem is its a luck of the draw where, when, and how wood comes my way and having the time to get it processed and stacked as you know. Warm weather coming too and i dont really like making firewood in the heat.

I didn’t know jo191145 was the first to get it:rofl:  Warm weather ain’t my favorite for the firewood either. So prioritize the BL but entertain a select species.... makes sense! I see a thread title in the future... “Tripped over a (you choose species) to save a black locust:rofl:

    Thats funny!

I wont cut any spars in this location. Just taking whats on the ground. One more trunk next to where this one was and thats it for this area until next year for now. Several smaller logs in front from prior storm clean up. Two more good size trees 18"+ on the ground. One may still be living as sprouts coming from the log.

Ive split all the BL from recent scrounging. Mound of splits growing. It will get relocated to the back yard once mud season is over. I'll hit the scores a few more times. Guessing i have roughly five cord of dead BL on hand. IMG_4569.JPG

Reboot to this thread. Been jonesing to hit these spots again, but wanted rack at storage empty first. Nice load for a couple hours works. 100' off the road to schlep rounds out. Lots of smaller barkless trees and tops on the ground. Low 20's and bright sun made for a crisp cutting day. First tree was a partial hang up. Bucked as far as i could but didnt let go. Too wedged to free up IMG_0327.JPG
    IMG_0325.JPG
Hacked a new path to the road and started in on the next two. IMG_0330.JPG Played human skidder on a couple lengths otherwise taken out two rounds at a time. IMG_0329.JPG
    IMG_0338.JPG IMG_0339.JPG
Probably half cord including limb wood. Rounds ready for splitting. Ill cover so i can split next week if it snows here. IMG_0340.JPG Couple other stashes to hit as well. Probably another load from here too.
    Locust mania baby...gotta love it!

It sure was. The hanger will be there for the next many years, i bet. It was really wedged in there. I drive by it all the time and will see when and if it lets go. Lots of limb wood and smalls as well. Biggest tree was 12" DBH i think. Even then they are still HEAVY to carry out with the tongs.

Good stuff, I've got a ton of locust to cut yet in the coming weeks/months. One job has several tall, straight 18" diameter trees, gonna be a nice haul at that job. On the downside, there's quite a few big ailanthus trees that gotta go first.....I did a emergency job last summer there where one of those ailanthus trees snapped out and landed on the businesses roof, there were spotted lanternflys on them trees. I wanna get them gone while their dormant.....

They will all go to the compost center.

Cut a lot of TOH around the field perimeter. Have about ten left to go about 150 feet from my processing area. These ten will go in the burn pile. :)

Rain was holding off so i hit one of my little BL honey holes again this afternoon. Got most of what i cut today out and the rain started. Got too wet before finishing, but decent load for nearly two hours. One 12" tree and a couple tops. IMG_0506.JPG IMG_0507.JPG Rack as of yesterday. Once split this and yesterday splits should almost fill the second row. IMG_0503.JPG

So, trivia question for Mr locust hoarder Brad...how would you go about positively identifying BL in the dark? (without touching it)
