Over the last few months we have been wrapping up things since my dad died. It is a small rural parish they belong to. My mom's side of the family put on the reception meal after the funeral at city hall because the church's hall was too small and mom didn't want to bother the small "circle" of older ladies who usually put on the meals. Talking with mom last night she said when it is her turn that she wants us to do the same at city hall but maybe hire it catered. I asked her if she had anything in particular that she wants served and she true to form said something simple and good. I got to thinking that I kinda like that idea because it takes the burden off of a small group of ladies that seem to handle things graciously but have to make time out of their lives often on short notice and never ask for a dime. Another thing that I like is it gives business to a local that does this kind of thing for a living. Then I thought if I were to plan my meal, what would I want? I'd probably go with some of my favorites, knoephla soup, haluski kapusta with ham, sauerkraut, fresh buns, kuchen, and sour cream rhubarb bars. I'd probably take mercy on the picky eaters and have a roaster of scalloped potatoes, some corn, and cookies for the wimps. What do you guys do for occasions like this or what would you like served at your memorial meal?
Wow, never thought about it, and I don't know why. I'd have to say bbq, thats my favorite food group. Cook a big azz hog, some briskets, all the sides, and hushpuppies. Man that sounds good shame to wait and everyone else get it just cause im laying there. Interesting thread, looking forward to seeing what others say....
Thank you. Dad passed in June and had the reception then and was nice seeing everyone. I was just talking with mom about getting all the ends tied up with life insurance, wills, ect, and then this topic popped up. It isn't necessarily a fun topic but it sure is nice being able to know what people want when they are gone instead of guessing in the midst of grief.
