35 out, 76 in. Snow to start @ 5a and should mess up the morning commute. Loaded the box full of red and chestnut oak.
Ya, we get them quite strong , usually only once a winter. As long as someone doesn't live down by a river or in a low area. They are usually fine. With the snow pack on most roofs here still. It's a concern if there is a rainy day. That will munch more buildings.
I guess I don't understand burning Hardwoods. I always view hot burning coals as a good thing. But the way lots of hardwood burners talk. They actually have to work to burn the coals ?? Not sure when the last time I lit a new fire in my stove. Maybe October? Maybe September. When I shovel out ashes, I push the coals to the back of the stove and shovel out the front 1/2 - 2/3 rds of the stove. Then I rake the coals to the front, throw some wood on and off it goes.
+10°F ambient temperature Winds light from the south/southeast. Was snowing a couple hours ago. With a stronger breeze. Dry White Spruce in the stove.
Ya, that's chilly, btdt all I need to. Many times ! I very seldom calculate the windchill. Who is going to believe it when a person says it's 85 below outside. It hasn't gotten that cold here yet this winter. But it has been in the 70s below windchill. Both Delta and Glennallen have had in the 70s below ambient. Not super common. But it happens here. I gotta get some wood here before it turns cold again.
Beins I grew up a bit north of Bangor Maine. I gotta say Paul Bunyan is from MAINE !!! The statue of him in Maine is much better looking.
Morning ya'll, 32* here and dropping, freezing rain. I just lit a fire in a stone cold stove. 49 inside temp. Wearing a sweatshirt for now.
A big whooping 0 out there this morning heading to a high of 14f. Loaded the stove with locust, ash and maybe some mulberry. At least it slows down the furnace running.
17/73 hard maple Supposed to drop to 9 by 5pm. It was 34 a couple hours ago but won't be above freezing again for the rest of January
-10/66 Milking out a few coals while fixing the boss breakfast Coffee is hot and the Oak is staged and ready for sacrifice...... Stay warm all.
Coals are indeed nice and there is heat in them. Yet there is not enough heat in just coals when the outside temperature drops. It can be a problem for then there is not enough room to add much fuel to the fire. I've burned wood almost all my life and never had a problem until we installed our present stove. There was a learning curve, albeit short and we figured it out quickly. No, it is not work. I do the ash the same way.
The wind chill got popular simply because it make one feel like they are in the really cold climate. I pay no attention to it. I grew up before that bs was reported and we just knew when it got cold it was cold. When it gets windy that wind will just drive the cold into you. Has anyone ever rode a bike in winter? Notice it is colder when moving? Or stick your arm out the window of a moving vehicle? Ever wonder why fans are used in summer?
