Farmer Steve's post jogged my memory. I had a very similar experience. This photo is from 5 years ago, taken in September as I was checking my stands. When I first set the stand up years before that, all the ash trees were alive and the ground was much more open. Now they're all dead and it is thick as snot in there. And then this photo - bullseye!
damm, that's scary to think of. I have a single stand on a cherry tree that has some dead wood on it, it's co-dominant with another tree and I think that one has the top broken out sitting in the crotch of the tree my stand is in. It's very precariously perched, I can see the rotten wood that's "holding" it in place. I finally had to abandon it this year. The whole thing sways scarily in the wind and if it gives it'll take the stand down, hopefully that's happened! Hoping to build a shack soon so I can stay out of the weather. Yikes! Brings the saying "when a tree falls in the woods, does it make a sound?" to mind..... You'd have found out that day if you were in that stand!!
I had one fall about 30 yards from my stand this past fall and yes, it does make a sound lol. Ruined my hunt too lol.
OUCH! Right in the crotch! Or is that just a pic of two trees? Maybe that saying "the worst day hunting is better than the best day working" needs to be re-thought?
