In a medical first, doctors transplanted a pig heart into a patient in a last-ditch effort to save his life. The Maryland hospital said Monday that he’s doing well three days after the highly experimental surgery. The patient, David Bennett, a 57-year-old Maryland handyman, knew there was no guarantee the experiment would work but he was dying, ineligible for a human heart transplant and had no other option. “It was either die or do this transplant. I want to live. I know it’s a shot in the dark, but it’s my last choice,” Bennett said a day before the surgery, according to a statement provided by the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Good luck to you and hopes of a speedy recovery David Bennett. A link to the AP News article is below.

I knew a lady here that had pig valves stitched on in the late 90's. They break down faster, so she had them done again about 10 years after the first. Extended her life by 20 years. I believe she was 60 when she passed.

My father just got a pig valve put into his heart in the last couple of years. A whole heart muscle though is way different. Wow.

I wonder what happens to the rest of the pig?

I mean, the heart must be collected under the strictest of sanitary conditions, right? Not your standard slaughter yard set up..........."Hey Joe! We're gonna need one pig heart but make sure there's no nicks of cuts in it.....and don't drop it on the floor.......it's gotta be kinda clean!"

A buddy (still alive) had a pig valve put in back in the mid 2000's. He asked if he gets the rest of the pig or just the valve!
