Another one of my "purely by accident" scores. Delivered a cord of black locust Sunday. Guy helping me unload asks if i wanted some wood then proceeds to tell me its walnut. He had a tree taken down. Not a wood id normally go nuts over but have only cut it once in the past. My ears perked up. "the logs are really big,. Dont know if you will able to cut them" I grinned to myself as i walked into back yard. I guess his definition of really big and mine are two different things. Remnants on the corner of the property from a couple years ago. Had to bring second half cord today. Brought wheelbarrow, cant, maul, and the 500i to see what i could do. The long log was ideal for milling but really no way to get it out of there intact. Hard enough just in rounds. Had to wheel around the house, up a small hill, behind the fence then carry sections 50' back from the corner to load up the wheelbarrow. Put a few hours in and heaping PU full. More there than i thought. Halved like cake with the Isocore Unloaded at storage. Lighter logs to the left are red maple from last week. A few more rounds and one 4' log i saved for milling ill get tomorrow. Again, not a wood to go gaga over, but its more of an "exotic" as jo191145 calls them. It may be years before i get more.
I enjoy burning it in the fire pit. I’ll burn it in stove also but really like the smell of it burning.
Nice! Another species I have yet to score, although my only interest in it would be for small woodworking projects.
Interesting. That's one wood I don't burn in the fire pit. It irritates most peoples eyes. buZZsaw BRAD It dries quickly, and has decent BTUs, but it makes a lot of ash. As you've seen, it splits easily too. I'll definitely hoard all I can get as it's a nice shoulder season wood, except anything like that will probably be turned into slabs by my buddy. He's got enough clientele that he can sell it and get a lot more value out of it as lumber than firewood value.
Does it burn with pretty colored flames as ive heard? It had some nice heartwood color and it did bug me to turn it into firewood. Theres a couple rounds that had some nice end color that i left intact to make cookies. Bringing hand truck tomorrow.
This was not that easy. Anything other than BW, mulberry, black locust, idve left it. I know of walnuts rot resistance. Guy said two years cut and only the bark was loose.
Brad, you need a csm! Walnut definitely won’t bring a premium selling for heat. I can hear buzz-saw cursing right now.
Maybe I misspoke. For a hoarder like we are. Easy is when someone shows you some nice logs to sink the saw in.
I called him when i got there and gave him the bad news. The logs diameter was too big for his BSM. His takes up to 20" There may have been a way to retrieve it from the neighbors yard. One 4' log ill hand truck out for milling. Couple rounds for cookies. It was cramped enough to cut in the spot let alone mill.
That was a pretty nice score there Brad. Like you said not exactly humongous at 21" across. But still not bad size and some nice-looking wood.
I have a decent amount of walnut in my ready to burn stacks right now. I rather like it. I’d say it hangs in there with Ash. Super easy to split and dries pretty fast. I’ve never noticed the flames being any different, I’ll have to take a closer look next time I burn it.
Nice score. Was there a possibility of using buzz-saw's chainsaw mill to trim them down to a size that fit in his BSM? The cants would still be tough to move without a loader, but somehow I think you two guys can come up with something. Yep, makes a lot of ash.
Good score Brad. C/S/S/C and that should dry pretty quick. As I've mentioned before I sell that as a fireplace/ambience wood because of the blue/green flames. The drier it is the less colors when burnt.
Nice score Brad. You don’t need a machine. I know a guy that lives right near you that can whittle that log down to 20”s wide with one of them splitting axes. Think old school LOL
