So, one of my BIL's gave me this axe head. It was rusted and had a broken handle. Well, I decided to do something different with it just for the fun of it. I already have plenty of axes so why not. The first pic of the axe head is after I got the old handle out and then cleaned it up and put an edge on it. The handle is an extra handle I had around for a pick. The overall length is 27". I like the short handle.
I used a hand grinder from harbor freight with a cut off wheel on it. Made a bunch of pie cuts with it to get the curves. Then used a file and some sanding drums on a drill.
You know I did not weight it. I should have because I took quite a bit of steel off of it. I guess you could say it is somewhere between an axe and a hatchet. That is what I like about.
Was just wondering. I agree- shape is between both. Looking forward to your review after turning it loose on some wood.
Where I will probably use it is when I make some of my kindling. I will take some splits from the lodge pole I have and split it down smaller. A hatchet is too small for that, and I do not need a full-size axe. Better aim with something lighter and a shorter handle.
I did not remember that thread. He sure did some nice work. If this axe head had been a Collins I probably would not have hacked, it up like I did with this one.
Made a cover for the axe head today. Something simple. Vinyl and pop rivets. Aluminum rivets so I could peen the other side down some. I might add a strap later.
