I burn coniferous almost exclusively and the amount of ash I have to remove from my stove is pretty minimal. The odd time I get a chance to burn hardwoods Im surprised the amount of ash it creates.
We’re getting our first true cold spell so far this winter. Which is unusual for these parts. And we’ve had nothing but a dusting of snow so far which is very unusual around here. It’s in the low 20’s today, predicted to drop into the low teens tonight with the high tomorrow to be 17. Supposed to get 1-3” of snow tonight too. The stove is getting a mix of hickory, cherry, beech, locust and maple. It’s nice and comfy inside!
Not sure about what googly eyes shows but Pogo Mine is a Lode (hard rock , underground) mine. It's a big mine. But the hundred or more miles of tunnels are underground. . Most of which are refilled with the spoil that is made into concrete and pumped back in so there is no gaps . Tight as a drum !
I shoveled 2.5 gallons of ashes out of the woodstove today. -18° F. 5 to 10 mph light breeze . Wonderful weather. Bare headed is good for about 15 minutes before my ears start giving me a talkin to. It is so nice out, after the past few weeks of storm and cold and wind. I mean, it's Wonderful. I'm getting 2 to 3 gallons of ashes out of my stove each week. It's kinda different. The stress of Icemeggedon 2021. Is hopefully past. I feel Tired today. I was supposed to go up and shovel off the rest of my roof. But all I'm doing is in the house stuff. Sewing my dogs collar back together, shoveling out the stove. Got the wife to help me put a chalk line for a shelf in the kitchen. In the cold the bottom door seal broke off our current egress door. So my plan is to screw a strip of carpet to the outside of the door. Wide enough so it protrudes into the house an inch . It won't seal as well as factory. But it won't break at 50 below like the factory bottom door seal did.
A very comfortable 30 outside right now. Currently burning 4 splits of chestnut oak and a thick split of 2 year old apple, air choked down and rolling slow flames for the long haul. 3-6” of the white stuff predicted for overnight into the day tomorrow. I see “real” winter is finally coming for us next week
9 outside currently, 74 inhouse.... Just threw my overnight dose in of 2 chunks of walnut and the rest hedge. Including a 6' diameter hedge log in front of the dog house. Let it chew threw that tonight...
-2F clear & calm. Snow quit about 2hrs. ago. Got about 6" of light fluff. It's nice & peaceful out, very comfortable without the wind, stars a nice & bright. 74 inside with a nice low Locust fire rolling along. Oak in the boiler. This is about as good as winter gets here, I hope it stays for a while.
28/76 3 big blocks of of red oak and the rest was nice and dry mulberry. Definitely not waking up cold in this house!
10 F this morning and it was 76 in the house when I woke up... Since I had a nice bed of coals and still fairly warm in here, I went another prime choice of meat. I went with some nice 4 or 5 year cured Honey Locust.
