Current shot of our weather. Daytime high might get to -17°, tonight -30° air temp. Even did the North Dakota nice thing and stopped on my way to work and jumpstarted someone having problems. When we get to 20° next week it will feel like a heatwave. :dennis: Screenshot_20220106-085347_DuckDuckGo.jpg

Coldest I've ever felt was 20 below, at the summit of a mountain in Vermont. That was on vacation though  It's hard to imagine having to function normally in those temperatures.

The thing that pops into my head every time I see air temps & windchills down around 40below is the “Rodeo Song”. The oil patch was basically a rodeo & I spent many day/night driving around in those temps & when I got kicked out of the truck, I was working outside in it. Good times.

No you can't indefinitely stay out in it. If you are dressed right and can take an occasional warm up it is surprising how a person can acclimate to this. When I used to work at a grain elevator and was out in it all day, I almost all winter ran around with only insulated bibs and a sweatshirt. Couldn't wear insulated boots because my feet would get warm and sweat.

I never could figure out how my 2 great uncle's survived the winters when they homesteaded out there living in a soddy. Down near Watford city.

I suppose if you never left the farmstead, which back then many didn't, once you had those 2 foot thick walls of sod heated up it was a tremendous heat sink. That and out in that country there are coal seams that come out the sides of hills so fuel was moderately easy to get. Still doesn't mean I'd want to try it!

Grandma said her job as a kid was to feed the chickens and pigs, and collect any corn cobs left laying by the animals to use in the cookstove.

My mother used to burn corn cobs in the wood cook stove.
