"electricity is by far the most expensive per BTU of any fuel. Always has been , always will be."
Well,no, you also have to figure in efficiency of the heating device.
Also,in the 70's,into the 80's, on the eastern seaboard, there were huge pushes to switch over to electricity, because it was so cheap. Many houses and apartments were build, better sealed, and with radiant ceilings. Lets take a look at costs back then-

Now lets look at appliance efficiency-

And that is not even figuring in transportation and storage, and maintenance of heating appliances.

Back to work you slackers!! Eerr, Technically I might be the slacker. Back to the home renovations.

Try to finish to drywall in the kitchen(in between naps). 2 walls to go. Get the dishwasher functional too. Officially outta cash, So it will be a while before the rest of the cabinets and flooring gets do! Hope to get the quad install started on the front porch next week?

I'm going to install the old Quadrafire pellet eater out on the front porch to keep it warmer than it is. I have all the pipe to install it so its not nicking the budget to get it installed.

    Finally some proper winter temperatures.

I used the mini split for most of my main floor heat in December. I did use the P43 on a couple of very windy days and another couple of mornings to just give a shot of extra warmth. Was waiting with a bit of trepidation on the electric bill - but this was all an experiment to see if it was a feasible method during months that aren't bone chillingly cold.

So far, this winter has been much as last winter, pretty mild. Using the P43 for 100% of the main floor heat, usage of pellets in Nov. 2020 & Nov. 2021 was within 2 bags of each other. Using the stats from December 2020, I should have used about 40 bags of pellets this past December, but I used only 28. I surmise I saved around 12 bags of pellets which would retail for $5/bag ($250/ton assuming I didn't buy any off CL or FBM). So, that was around $60 I didn't use in pellets. Interestingly, my electric bill went up by exactly $60 (okay, $59.83) from November, so it looks like a wash pretty much.

Course this month electric rates go up 8%, and the morning lows are getting to be in the single digits and teens, so the P43 has been drafted to almost full time status for the main floor.

Should be fun next Mon night thru Tues, high temp on Tues forecasted to be about 12*. Be pulling in a few more bags of the doug firs for those days.

A new sight over the weekend at our bird feeders was a large amount of Starlings, at one point on Sunday morning there were about 21 on the ground and a couple more up on the feeders. They wiped out the wire basket full of mealworms, had to refill it so our resident bluebirds could get some. Only have seen a couple the past few days, maybe the cold Mon & Tue drove them south.
