Sears was a mainstay of my family back in the day, their name stood for quality. Our local Sears is gone, as is the quality that once was attached to their name. Craftsman tools, for the most part, are garbage anymore, IMO, I'll buy older used craftsman tools, but some of the newer stuff I've bought in recent years (namely their mid-grade ratchets) are pure trash.

It's sad to see once-great tools go down the commode....

    21 Sears and around 6 K-Marts.

Sears in town is now a Burlington Factory store and a Aldi.
K-Mart is now a grocery store.

When kmart took over sears, they essentially stopped any warranty replacement. Then their quality tools were replaced with chinesium junk.
It's a shame, but everyone wants cheaper stuff. And chyna is bringing it.

All major appliance brands now share on a few common parent companies, thus components too, with similar results in quality as the tools.

At one time the Sears catalog was second only to the Bible in US homes

As far as I know there is 2 Sears stores within 30miles of me. They are smaller stores but we still get a mail flyer from one of them.

Sears sold livestock also. And kits to make tractors from cars.

I used to have some of one for a very very short time ! I was at an auction and bought a pile of junk and had no idea what it was. A guy came running up to me all upset apparently he was making a batch of sewer pickles and missed it being sold. I let him pay for it and take it.

Ted Williams sporting goods. My friend had a Ted Williams shotgun. That was a Sears brand.

The great thing I remember most about Sears was that you could go in for a whole house worth of major appliances, and if you had a truck, you could leave with them that day. That's not very common anymore for sure. It was a blessing and a curse. Went in once to get stuff to furnish a home we rented, and left with washer, dryer, stove, and fridge, all on the good old Sears card. It was a bit much to chew at the time, but they made it so easy.
