Up here, 4" is good under the slab and extending past and boxed around it. Concrete transfers cold very efficently. It is amazing how much of a difference having all parts of the slab insulated makes.

I think everyone here has smoked the house up on occasion.
I left the fire go out yesterday and this morning the wife started a fire, and left some smoke out.
I purposely didn't start a fire last night because the rain and low pressure was sure to get a smoke smell going.

I think it is time to close comments on this thread. It has been getting a little off track as with common on many threads. But let me say this. When I first started the conversation, it was to cement my thoughts about woodstoves past and current. Your replies have been fun, reminiscent of the past and appreciated. I think a lot of people are afraid we are deforesting the world or polluting it with the output of our fuel choice be it part time or 24 /7 .

I enjoy this forum so much. A bunch of good people from all parts.
    Be well and stay safe.
