If one has a bucket of sand or ashes handy they can smother a fire.

One of the best things and one big reason I went with Woodstock Soapstone is their 6 month guarantee. They rarely get one back but do honor that guarantee. I do know of some but most they take back is because they needed a larger stove. They then buy either a Progress or Ideal Steel or Absolute Steel (those are hybrid stoves).

That was the same runaway experience I had too and it was with a big Lopi. The stove never ran away far enough to actually damage itself but way hotter than the wife wanted and she called me at work all upset and wanting to call the fire department.

There’s a fine line between an epa stove designed to burn clean with the throttle fully closed, and the same stove at 800+ because the strong draft sucks through too much combustion air.

My current stoves are very controllable and don’t run away. I have a key damper on the shop stove for fun. The sooteater chimney cleaning brush goes right past it which is nice.

I have always used pitchers of water.
But, I never had 3 or 4 Thousand dollar stove to try to regain control of .

Speaking of EPA stoves. I was going thru the MF Fire web site last night . I was bummed that they listed All of the species of trees we have in Alaska as Low Grade ( not reccomended) woods to burn in their stoves.
Which is fine. Plenty other manufacturer's of woodstoves that are happy to have Alaskan's use their woodstoves.

They also claim 50 million Americans "rely" on wood for heat . My definition of "rely" must be different than theirs.
