A near neighbor had a honey locust removed by pro’s. They were going to haul away & dispose of the logs but I offered $20 for them to use their machine to move ‘em to my processing area. SCORE! FB283C70-2CA6-4393-B9EE-F1600C06222C.jpeg

It will be 2 years minimum until the HL is dry enough to burn so we let mother nature & wind & sun to do their magic.

A honey locus blew down in the park behind my house in the city a few years ago. I was at work. My wife called me to tell me the crew was there to clean it up. I asked her to ask them to set aside for me. They brushed her off, saying that it wouldn’t make good firewood

I know people that don’t like honey locust, I think that’s cause of them not letting it season. Myself I let it season 4 years. I don’t have best drying conditions but that’s what it takes to dry here. I have a lot on my property so I like it. The other down fall is bugs like it. Hickory bores can make a mess of your stacks.

They have their own borer and the beetles kinda resemble wasps from a distance. I burned HL exclusively for an entire season many years ago, in the summer you could hear the beetles munching on that wood when walking past the stacks, day or night.

It's great wood for banking off an overnight fire, leaves an amazing coal bed.

I’ve found that if I keep my fresh cut HL inside my pole barn till around June I don’t get the bores. After a summer of drying they leave it alone. Most of my wood goes in totes so it’s easy for me to move. The HL I’m burning now looks like Swiss cheese!

I just finished my first Holz hausen with my first honey locust score. It was taken alive so I plan to give it 3 years (if I can force myself to wait that long). Man that stuff is heavy when green, I’d be scared to know how much the hausen weighs. Sure is nice stuff to split an the color is cool!

AWESOME score there! Id love to get more myself. Popular yard tree here. Splits easily too.
I have over a cord put aside from a couple scores Summer 2020. Ill check it next Fall for MC. Ill make a point to check for borer activity next time im near that stack.

Nice score Gark i just scored a couple truck loads of HL myself. It is heavy green and I can’t believe how easy it splits! I’ve had some in my stacks for a year, I'm looking forward to burning it, but it might give me good reason to get a moisture meter to make sure it’s dry enough.

That's a Great Score for $20 drop off... Love the color of the wood, the smell of a fresh split, and the heat. The dust from the borers not so much love there.

It sounds to me as if the HL is a mixed blessing but worth much.

Nice you got them to move the wood for you Gark

How much did you end up getting at that big HL score last Winter DH?
