My Super Split came with a 6hp Subaru. Great little engine. The Honda was an upgrade option. Now they only offer Honda since Subaru no longer makes small engines as was said by others.

Ariens stopped making splitters a while back.

Think so. I can't find any new ones in stock any where. There's no mention online on their site of log splitters. It's possible that they make a different brand than ariens, but something tells me that they got out of the log splitter biz in the last couple of years.

I did see this though. A list of all American made splitters, from 2018. Ariens is in this one, but there's others.

USA Made Log Splitters List | 14 Manufacturers & Brands

I've never seen brute force brand. Brute, yes, but that's a Briggs and Stratton owned company.

I saw that page last year when I was shopping. It's pretty out of date hence the Ariens still on it. IIRC, there are a few others on there that are no longer made as well.

With almost a dozen American made units in that list, not to mention Canadian made and those coming from overseas, I guess the market is just to watered down and not worth the effort for some companies.

I would always opt for the Subaru over the Honda when they were readily available. Build quality was every bit as good (as Honda GX) on most engines and the engines ran quieter, especially under load. It's not a night/day difference but if you ran a 270cc Subaru and then turned around and ran the same unit with a GX270 on it, there's a noticeable difference. GX's are certainly the gold standard, but when there was an equivalent that was typically -$200 at retail, why pay the premium?

Yep now all the Subaru designs are sold under Yamaha, fuji motors made all the polaris sled and four wheeler engines from around 1971 to 1996.

Kawasaki is another brand of small engines that is creeping into OPE. They have been doing John Deere and many other riders for a while but my Swisher splitter has one as well. Electric start VTwin. I am very satisfied with it so far.

I'd avoid Timberwolf. Made in the USA, but took them three months longer than expected to ship it, and it arrived with two different, unrelated problems. The table grate doesn't fit properly - and the replacement they sent me doesn't fit properly either. The control valve is defective too, so I haven't had a chance to put much wood through it. It does split wood when it's running properly, but definitely won't be ordering my next splitter from them.

I bought a wolf ridge 28 high output this year I looked at the american cls also the reason I did not go with them is they did not offer autocycle on their splitters and I am so used to that feature I chose the wolf ridge I also got the elevator so far it has been a great machine. Super split has been around since the late 70's and they build a good product fast cycle and their best unit I think is around 4000.00 JB

I really like the fr730 on my gravely zero turn. It’s been trouble free for the last 5 years. Doesn’t use a bit of oil either.

I just pulled the trigger on a Super split hd with the wide production table. Lead time was estimated at 12 weeks. I’m pretty stoked. Might even have it in time for the Backwoods Savage gtg.

Hearing about commercial firewood producers putting 1000’s of cords of firewood through the super split really made it an easy decision. As a former hand splitter this type of splitter was really appealing to me.

When I called to place my order I talked to one of the owners for quite awhile. I like that kind of service.

When was this purchased, and then delivery? I think you got a lemon. That can happen with anything. How far up the ladder have you gone?

I did a longer post about it here. Ordered at the end of May, with an estimated 10-12 weeks to delivery. Received it Nov. 29. They have worked on addressing my issues. But it took them two weeks to ship out a replacement table grate, which was then also defective, so I'd view it as a company issue, not a one-off issue. Highest I've been able to get is the sales manager, which is who I was put through to when I asked for the highest person available for me to talk to.

For lawn mowers, the kawis are easily the most desirable engines. However even some of these Kawasaki engines had problems. Kohler's have been very reliable for me, but I never owned a courage series. I might be tempted to buy a Kohler in a mower due to more HP for the money compared to kawi.

Nice! There's many of us with zero first hand knowledge of the super splits.

I'll make sure to read that entire thread, but if it hasn't been said before, the supply chain has serious issues right now. Ad into that labor issues, particularly keeping long term employees, and any processes that are not fool proofed, and you can have massive issues in quality as well as lead times.

I had a kohler Command 23.5 go out on my toro dingo @600ish hours, but I had very little personal run time on it. I couldn’t say how well it was cared for. I replaced it with the same 23.5 hp size in command pro variety. It’s been good so far for the last 150 hours.

I have a high boy 25 from Home

call them to see how the supply chain impacts are hitting then though. I dealt directly with the owner and his wife. They have me the woodsmen field day discount about 6 years ago. Aside from changing oil, zero issues. Honda starts on 2 pulls and I use adjust the single edge as I need large splits. Good luck!!!

V-twin Kawasaki so do lots of high end zero turns.
They actually made some 2 cycle ope like trimmers and stuff for themselves and others just never caught on well
