You have a wood stove? Your house must smell like smoke!

Has someone ever said to you, "if you burn a woodstove your house will smell like a campfire"? I tell them, go to anyone's home with an efficient woodstove that they are operating properly, and you will rarely smell anything coming from it. We have friends with allergies that cannot sit by a campfire but have no complaints sitting by our woodstove for hours at a time. What have others had to say?

If I don't load wood properly, a few wisps escape.

    I hate when I do that!:headbang:

Overall, no comments from others about a smoky house.

Not 1 person has ever said to me that my house smells like a camp fire or smokey. I burn 6 to 8 cord a year.

Had a coworker that eternally smelled like they were smoking sausage. Tried to give them a few pointers and even said to check out FHC. They knew better, cut and stack anything for 6 months or less, don't need to split, and at that point my eyes glazed over and quietly bowed out. At least they live in the country and aren't smoking a neighborhood out making a bad name for wood burners.

I have heard it said about other wood burners and they well deserved it. Those homes always smelled of smoke.

After burning for a couple months now (in the new place) I asked 99 if she has ever smelled smoke here. The answer was "No". It is a wood furnace hooked up to the ductwork (of course) and if there was any smoke spillage, it would be distributed easily throughout the house.

I had an uncle whose house always smelled like a combination of pipe tobacco smoke and wood smoke.

This is a little different, but I had a co-worker with a OWB and he always wore his Carhartt work coat to load it...every time he came around I just wanted to roast some wienies and marshmallows for some reason! And this was in an industrial environment, so for his stench to precede him, that's sayin something!

Same thing here for when I had the OWB. But....thats all I used that carhart for; I didn't wear it anywhere else!

My wife grew up in a home heated by an old buck stove back in the 70s, when I announced I was installing our first wood stove years ago she protested VEHEMENTLY against it.....said she grew up smelling like a piece of beef jerky....lmao...

Once the battle was over, even she was amazed at how much different a modern appliance is from the old ones...

These new stoves are AMAZING. We rarely have even a whiff of smoke smell in the house unless I purposely allow it (I'm known to do this when putting a few pieces of apple, cherry, hickory or white oak on the fire), anytime someone comes to the house to visit, they are amazed at how cozy it is and the fact that the house doesn't "smell" like a woodstove resides there.

I get told that quite often in the spring at work, but not from wood stoves.....

    No wonder you married her!

I don't mind a little whiff of smoke smell once in awhile, I've been known to "accidentally" let a little escape, but I'll never admit that to Mrs DG.:)

Even Mrs. Overkill comments on how "cozy" a whiff of smoke is once in a while.....until I chuck a few splits of bark-covered locust onto the coals.....

Yes. Just like Scotty Overkill, the wife said that to me when I first put our insert in. She has a business in the country and said a lot of her customers would come in smelling of smoke. Also driving back and forth to her job there are a lot of OWB and chimneys billowing white smoke, so I’m sure that’s what she had in her mind. Now that we’ve had it for 8 years I don’t think she’d want to be without. I also love letting a little wisp of smoke in from time to time.
