Hobby boat, kind of a backburner hobby right now, hope to put it back in the water in a couple years when the major house renovations are done and im sitting on a much bigger stash of firewood. Hoping to put away 3 years worth this winter
Just about what I figured it would be. A salty craft with deep water, working boat roots! Nice rig. What power may I ask?
There used to be dozens and dozens of those being churned out along the Maine and Canada coast, handmade of wood. Now there's just a few fiberglass molders making that style. Not too many wooden boat builders or repairers any more and insurance for a commercial wooden vessel is almost non existent or the rate is so high it may as well be.
I hear ya! I gotta learn to not be so pessimistic with getting the free deliveries, i just get paranoid about the stuff I could never handle. just last week I had a guy post on a local fb page he was looking to offload trailers of black locust. I figured it was too good to be true but I messaged him and he seemed unusually vague which was a red flag to me, but he showed up to my house with a dump trailer of dang near perfect 3-8' black locust logs, dumped right where I wanted them and we ended up shooting the chit for a while. I threw him a few bucks for his effort even though I never pay for wood but i figured he saved me a ton of time and effort.
This reminds me of a time I drove by a tree company cutting down an oak tree. They had a bunch of it sitting next to the road. I'm talking 14-20" in diameter all clean straight logs. 5-8' long. They had a massive pile. I stopped and asked what they were doing with them. They said giving them away for free because it costs them to dump them at the dump. I told them I live two blocks away and if they want they can dump them in my yard. Absolute perfect firewood logs. I was going to split a lot of them with my axe for the exercise and the rest with the log splitter. The trunk was still standing. It was massive. It was about the same size as the first picture in this thread. It was about 30' long and didn't get smaller until 30' or so. They asked if I wanted any of it and I laughed. I said no, that's a big much. So the next day I'm working my neighbor calls me freaking out. He said a tree company has just dumped a huge dump truck load of logs into my yard. I said oh yeah, I know. I told them I could. They were some good smaller firewood logs I planned to split for the wood burner etc....he laughed and said boy, your smaller logs definition is different than mine. I drove home two hours later and when I got home I saw what they dumped in my yard. It was the trunk......I about crapped myself. All I had at the time was a 461, axe, and a few wedges. I can't even remember how many hours it took me bucking that trunk up. I got a hold of the tree company and asked why they did it. They said sorry. Someone else drove by the next morning saying they'd take the smaller stuff if we load it on their trailer. They made a bunch of trips and took all of it. We figure we'd at least give you some wood for free. yeah...free.... Never again! I won't deal with tree companies unless I go get the logs from them myself. sorry for the rant.
That's the exact scenario I'd be worried about, because what is supposed to be "free" would probably end up in me having to go out and buy another saw and turning that "free wood" into a $1500+ project
Ahhh! It sure looked like a Maine lobstah boat to me. Those boats seem to stay on the east coast as I've never seen one in the upper Midwest. It sounds like you need that loader mounted splitter of big stuff like this shows up regularly.
Yep, tree services will do what's the most expedient/least expensive. When I haul for other tree guys I line up 2-4 dump trailers & watch them load, I'll take some bigger stuff if they're also giving me the good stuff, but my log yard is not a landfill. I can handle the big stuff, but it costs too much in time & labor. In my case I usually have at least one & often two dump set ups ready to go so I can get there quick & get the good stuff. I had one guy that promised me lots of good logs if he could dump at my place, I said of course. Well sure enough his BIL or somebody wanted the good firewood & took it from the job, he then dumped about 3 cord of nasty crotches & big knotty but logs at my place. I loaded them back up & dumped them at his place, haven't seen him since. Heard he's in jail.
Ya if you deal with the tree guys you better be ready to get a big saw. That's why I got the 460 with 32" bar.It has come in handy more than a few times.Don't play with the big boys unless you go big.
It's running a mercruiser 260hp (350 chevy) hopefully will get a chance to repower with a diesel in the future, would love to put a 4bt in it! The engine is freshwater cooled, so It may have been built for the lakes and been here ever since, Ill never know I guess.
Can you post more pics from different angles, or maybe a vid? I would love to have a skid steer and mounted splitter. Oh the fun we could have!!
