Thought I had found a walnut log. Old homeplace type spot with all kinds of homepage type trees. Some dead walnut, Hackberry, maybe an Osage orange (very rare here) and a small dead black locust or two. I definitely cut a black walnut limb or two that was on top of this log, but this seems way to light colored. Is this black locust? No bark to show. Solid except a bit of center rot at base, and heavy as a SOB ....
Well dammmmmmm..... I really wanted BW. How is black locust sawn into boards...like for a small bookcase or such?
I should have known it wasn't walnut before I ever sunk the saw in it, cause all the bark and sapwood was gone, and I don't think BW would have been that good looking that old. I'm sure I will get a lashing or perhaps demerits...but I'm a bit bummed that it's black locust and not walnut. I wanted to get a local guy to mill it, and eventually make something with it. Anyone ever used black locust for projects....based on looks and grain, not outside stuff for rot resistance?? I can't tell yall how hard i worked for this wood....loaded in trailer in 8 ft ish sections, by hand. 2nd to stump log was a little over basketball size and 8 ft, I tried and tried to get it in the trailer whole, but I'm not set up for that and it was whooping my arse.... Had to cut it and the butt log in half and then bull them in. I am hurting. Rum and Cherry coke trying to help, advil later, and hopefully I'll be able to move in the am.... Is this next pic Osage? I cut two dead limbs off, brought all the limbs out, even the real small stuff. Phone case is for size reference. The green thorny things are absolutely nasty. Wondering of its some kind of Asian orange....? Or do small Osage oranges look like that?
You found gold there! Thats black locust for sure. My favorite to scrounge, preferably barkless. Hard as nails.
Just clarifying...the first pics were of a down log. The one I'm thinking g is Osage is a different tree, obviously. I just cut two limbs off the "osage".....too some that had a crotch or two long, that crap is hhheeeaaavvvyyyy too
Yes, hard as nails, even with a brand spanking new stihl bar and chain....and heavy as chit too! You ever tried to load 8 ft long basketball sized logs I to a trailer by hand? Doesn't go so well.....
Black walnut is rot resistant. I can understand your frustration not finding it to mill. The thorns remind me of what i hack through lots of times to scrounge black locust. Hand held hedge clippers are standard equipment when i encounter them.
Yes, that is an Osage tree but those other pics are foreign to me. Small Osage trees thorns & are pretty mean but Osage thorns are smaller. Initially I was thinking Honey Locust but the color & branch structure doesn’t jibe with what I am used to seeing. Hawthorn??? Maybe ???
Ah...you remind me..I meant to take pics of the small fruit that was on the ground. Nothing like that fruit. Looked like small oranges, about the size of halos or cuties. I cut one open the other week when I was scouting this, tons of seeds and kinda bitter. I looked up Asian orange and found some things that looked similar.

The small locust patches I've seen in fields around here have thorns too, but they're usually gray, not this green color.
