Built this lean to roof off the back of my garage this past spring. Wanted somewhere to put my bbq table I made and also all my other cooking stuff, the garage was getting quite full. Got it “done” in the spring and enjoyed it for the summer. Had a few things to finish up but broke some bones in my leg mid September so had to put on hold. Out today taking advantage of this 60 degree December weather and getting the electrical taken care of. Putting 2 outlets and some lights in. Just thought I’d share with you guys. I’m not a builder but did this almost completely by myself (little help with the concrete). From the structure to the concrete to the post caps I did it all, so I’m pretty proud of it actually. Hindsight is 20/20 right? Should of poured a bigger pad. Not going to now but I found that stack of pavers for free so in the spring those are going to extend the pad out past the roof line. Show ya the lights I’m putting in after lunch. Edit: title is supposed to be cook shack, not cool shack. Not sure how to edit that.
Fantastic work g60gti Sorry to hear about your injury but thankful you’ve recovered! If you need help with any thread stuff, just PM one of us mods, or tag us in a thread post with “@“ and moderating.
Nice cooking area. Someday, hopefully, I'll have mine done.... As Eric VW mentioned, if you need help with anything, PM one of us mods!
Thanks for the kind words. Feels good to get it done(almost). Been a plan I’ve had in my mind for a long time but couldn’t fit in budget for a while. Got all the lumber and roofing through a Amish family so the project cost was pretty low. Lights are done, can finally see at night without a headlamp. Love going out and having a place to drink some pops and cook without stinking up the house. Buddys dubbed it the “creation station”.
I don’t know how a picture of Gus got in there, glad it was only my dog and not something that would get me in trouble with the misses. My cousins Thai wife says the cook shack makes her feel a little closer to Thailand. I guess in Asian cultures everyone has a outdoor kitchen which is where the real cooking takes place. Indoor kitchens are for looking pretty and making tea she says.
I figured he was the one that named it the creation station, as I’m sure he keeps a close eye on it when it’s being used
Awesome outdoor kitchen! I want to make one of those for my pellet grill. Need to get the lumber milled and drying first. Don't mean to hijack thread, but quick question... How does that burn barrel work in the background? Does the flue pipe actually draft? I guess if you had a lid on it it would.
You did a great job, you should be very proud. Looks like you paid a professional big money for that.
I put that together with freshly milled larch, didn’t dry it at all. I didn’t have the time or space really. I don’t know but a few people said it shouldn’t warp because it’s all fastened together. Been up since late May and everything is straight still. So that burn barrel is actually a soup/chili/boiling pot. It was in the basement of a buddys wife grandfather’s house. I helped clean the basement out when he passed and my buddy was gonna toss it. He’s a little jealous now I think that he gave it to me but at the time he was living in a apartment and wasn’t really into cooking. The grandfather was a big part of a ski club and also ran sailing regattas in the area. I guess he would take it to the slopes and regattas and cook huge batches of soup for everyone. He was quite well known for it. I’ve met a lot of people at the ski club who remember him and his backwoods cooker very well. When my kids get a little older we may join the club and reintroduced the cooler. There’s 2 stainless steel tubs that hold around 18 gallons. I think they may of been from a washing machine or something. Whatever they were someone put a little work into rolling the edges and welding them up a bit. It’s not something I use too often but is really fun when I do, usually a big party!
Very cool!! Glad I asked! Dang that seafood boil looks amazing!! Yeah I am not super concerned about building my outdoor kitchen with green or partly green wood.
Yeah, no problem. Glad I could share. He was a very interesting guy from what I’ve heard. I never met him but know lots of people who knew him, lots more who had heard of him even if they never met. Definitely the type of guy I wish I had the chance to know. Owned a boat building company and also a underwater construction and salvage company. I got a lot of interesting things from his house. During the clean out there was a small “save” area but everything else was going in dumpster or my truck.
Great spot to get your cooking on. Your catch barrel overflow is pretty stained. Do they all do that?
