I'm just curious, what is the longest length bar have people tried on a 261 ?

On a stock saw, 20" is going to be about all you have power and oil for, and you'd probably want skip chain for even that much.

I agree. My Dolmar 5100S is the same size and 16" is the ideal bar for these saws imo. An occasional 20" would work but certainly isn't ideal or even recommended. 20" bar saws really need a 60cc and up saw.

    I’ve never used bigger than a 16” bar on a 261.
This guy doesn’t mind using a bigger bar.

Yes it is, sort of; in the kind of way using NOS is impressive but I wouldn’t want to do it regularly on my daily driver. Will it still be impressive after that saw chits the bed from excessive heat & or the clutch chits out. I think that chap must be part of the Piltz group.

Some guys have spoken of using bars like that for limbing because it’s easier on their back, I can understand that. For regular cutting in hard woods it’s just redonkerous unless you have more money than brains & don’t care about your investment in the saw and your time is of no importance.

In a “pinch” I might use something like that but other than that just get a bigger saw or go home.

As others have stated 20” bar for regular cutting is about maximum for a 261. Some will argue that a 20” requires/works best with a .325 chain others say .375” will be fine. At least they are in agreement on the 20” part.

My comments are not critical of you B.Brown, just vids like that give all the wrong impressions for folks that don’t know any different.

To each their own & your question was longest bar ever ? That chap may win the prize although I think the Piltz boys may have put a 72” on a MS 250….

I'd like him to send me that Tsumi bar before that dipchit smokes it lol.
You got that pic that was posted of the saw set ups for the different regions? That was hilarious.

That's one way to give the M-Tronic plenty of time to self-adjust at WOT.

Another consideration is putting a long lever on a small saw frame and the impact it has on operator safety. What is the distance between front and rear grip on an MS261 vs MS462? There may be less torque from the 50cc engine but at the time of kickback, the inertia from a 32" loop of chain is the same, regardless of what engine is driving it. If not the operator, the saw suspension components certainly are feeling that long bar.

I haven't seen that one. Always interesting/entertaining to see the differences in what works and just plain operator preference.

It's here somewhere. It's a spoof, like a west coast saw is an MS200T with a 36" on it, east coast is a 660 with a 14" lp etc. I'll try & find it later if I have time.

I tried a 20” 3/8 on mine. It pulled it, but it was rough on it. I went back to 18 .325. Cuts well.

Cheepbeer , thats the combo I find works best on mine. It’s a ripper! Hope all are well, we set a record high here today @ 72*. Temp will drop right back down, trying to keep a small ash fire going and not sweat.

I ran my 20" 3/8" on mine and it wasn't particularly happy with it. It seems much happier with the 16" that's on there now...

20". 325 is the biggest Id run on a 50cc saw and crank the oiler up.
