I guess it depends on tree size. It's $20 for a 2-cord forest service permit. And there's still the time and effort to go find the wood.
I think you got a deal. As long as access is easy. A larger tree will be well over a cord possibly multiple cords counting the larger branches. Even the small trees would be 1/4 a cord. With that much I'm sure there's some good mill logs in there also
I'd do that in a heart beat to have some straight clean logs and not have to worry about the brush. Especially if its easy access and convenient.
sounds like a good deal if you can get sawlogs out even better locust here is .55to.65 bdft a 8ft x16'' log would be 39.60 @ .55 if you are referring hedge as osage orange tree the logs are worth anywhere from .55 to 1.25 bdft they are hard to come by nice and make real nice weatherproof lumber if you had the time maybe you could hook up with a sawmill to buy some just a thought I always look at logs for lumber first then firewood because I have the mill Good luck JB
There may be some good mill logs in there. Never dealt with anything other than firewood logs. May have to do some Googles to find a mill to cut it or see if they buy logs.
Those are interesting prices. I'd be curious if they are similar round here. Hedge "osage orange" is plentiful around here, but trying to find a 8' long straight piece is pretty tough usually.
Just an FYI, my cousin is into recurve bows and such. Apparently bow makers pay good money for Osage to make them. I'm far from an expert, just what he told me.
High quality hardwood, fair stump price, no clean up and you have the equipment to load and haul. Shake that man's hand in a deal and start your engines!
Maybe I missed it, but how much time do you have to harvest this wood. I don’t like the idea of paying $10 a tree but it’s way cheaper than any other prices you’ll find. And if you only have a limited time, then really how many trees are you going to get? So go for it.
Access is pretty good. Farm ground right now. As long as it doesn't rain or snow a lot at least. Its in low lying area, so a decent rain could slow progress.
Time frame isn't crystal clear. He said the construction work is supposed to start in the spring. So I'm guessing at least a 3 month window. Hoping to maybe cut for 3 weekends and haul for one weekend. Do that for as long as I can. Problem is this work crap I go to during the week. Really gets in my way of doing what I like. Also, I start to feel guilty spending to much time away from the wife and kiddos. Probably be more like cutting one day or half a day on the weekends.
Do they not enjoy riding along/helping? I'll often start a fire & roast hot dogs or similar. Grand Kids always love that. I understand that it's not for everyone.
The largest osage log I ever saw a tree service brought to me to get rid of it was 22'' in diameter and 16ft long I sold it all to a customer who made bows I got 3.00 a bd ft sawn for the lumber JB
