I don't think I have ever had sweet gum, but looking at the bark, it looks like elm.

Split a piece and you’ll know rather quickly. Looks elmish to me.

Looks like a lot of dark wood to be sweet gum. Also, when you look at the very center of the log like it's spidered out in all directions...I have never seen that in sweet gum either.

I think I will grab it. I know there is a gum log in front of it, bark is a bit different and it has fungus already growing on it.

Elm for sure. Once the bark starts falling off like that they aren't bad to split with hydraulics.

No experience with sweet gum. Dont know if it is around here. I know black gum (tupelo) is. Bark does look elmish though.

I've never looked at sweet gum very close, but it looks like elm to me. Of course not all elm die from Dutch Elm Disease, but if it looks like this under the bark, it definitely is elm.

To slightly hijack this thread, those insect tracts look like drawings on tipis by first nation people. Really cool, be a shame to burn them.

Sweet gum can take on a variety of looks with its bark but that doesn't look like sg.
