Good morning all. Looking for some help deciding which stove to buy..Choices are used Ht-2000 $400 or new Timber Ridge 50-TRW06 for $800. I am running a new Ideal Steel in the house and we absolutely love it..performs beyond our expectations...The new stove will be in the 3 stall garage with a shop on the end of one stall appox 1500-1600 sq ft...Have read many good reviews of the HT-2000..don't know much of anything about the TR. Appreciate any help you can provide. Oh I live in South Dakota so we get -30 or colder for a few days to a couple of weeks each year Scot
First, welcome to the site Gummy I think I'd have to consider how used the HT was. Because from where I'm standing, paying $400 for a stove feels way better than paying $800 for a stove. However- you're asking for a reason, so I looked it up and the HT-2000 looks to be retailing for about $1900 new... which makes me suspect the owner wants to get rid of it for some reason. I had a bit of experience with the model the Timber Ridge 50 replaced, the venerated 30-NC- and it was a very capable stove. All things being equal, I'd go with the less expensive stove. But since things aren't equal- I'd consider the condition of the used stove, and personally would feel more comfortable with the new one.
HT2000 gets my vote. Great stove I've got experience with. If it's in good shape it's a heck of a deal. Welcome to FHC. I would research the Timber Ridge stove models a bit before going that route.
Say no to the timber ridge. I had a summers heat until the glass fell out of the door in the middle of the night while there was a fire in it customer service was terrible at best!
Hi Gummy...I'm in NE SD, just a few miles south of ND border off I29. Welcome to FHC! I too just installed a new (unused - was in storage) 2018 IS...and I totally agree. Love the stove...still learning to run it to max effect, but easily keeping house comfortable.
This TR50 did not replace the NC30. The NC30 is alive and well in 2020 as the NC32. This TR50 is a POS. Don't buy it. I would have no problem buying the new NC32 though since it is a tried and true design with minimal internal changes for 2020. If the only two choices are HT2000 or TR50 then go HT2000 in my opinion.
Gummy Disregard my earlier comment- I was not comparing apples to apples. Thanks Highbeam - I don't want to give someone bad advice.
First off thanks for the nice welcome..you make a guy feel right at home..Following your advice I made about a 2 hour trip to look at the HT-2000..found it to be in above average condition, blower included, other than the C-CAST BAFFLE appears to be cracked..after a tough negotiation..I bought it for $350..I don't feel like I made a bad deal in today's market. I have seen a lot worse stoves bringing a lot more money. The reason he was selling is his insurance company was balking. I also brought another friend along who has been burning wood for many years and had a second set of eyes look the stove over and we both felt it was a good deal. Now with the next question any suggestions on where to buy the baffle? Appreciate any advice you can offer. Again thanks for the warm welcome and the help. billijak...I live in the small town of Fairview, About 35 miles SE of Sioux Falls
Well I took all the brick and baffles out and the stove appears to be in very good condition other than both baffles are cracked in half. So as a temporary solution I took some flat iron and sandwiched the baffle between 2 pieces. (see attached) The stove is functioning very well. Thanks again for steering me to the right conclusion
Looks like that will work for now...just FYI you can just glue that cracked baffle back together with furnace cement...and it works well on cracked firebrick too. Congrats on the steal!
Never thought about gluing them back together..my only concern with the way I did it, is that the steel may begin to warp?? ..if it does I may pull it apart and try the furnace cement..thanks for the advice!..This stove was on FM for 6 weeks or so..pictures were poor and I finally ask for a picture of the nameplate..was tickled when I saw HT-2000..it took a couple of days before we could meet up so I thought I better seek some advise and I couldn't think of a better spot than FHC..been lurking on here for 5-6 months..that is how I decided on the IS..without FHC I don't think I would have ever spent that kind of money on a stove..been some of the best money I ever spent!..A little history..early 80's I heated my house and shop with wood..did so for the next 20 years or so..kids grew up so I lost all my help..Built a Corn Burning boiler that I have used for the last 15 years??..heated the house and shop with about 300 bushel a year..This summer I knew corn wasn't going to come back down, so I bite the bullet and bought the IS..a new 37T splitter and was lucky enough to find enough aged ash to get buy this year, and found more than enough wood that we c/s/s for at least the next 2..God has been good to us!! and so has FHC!
