I've read where from 25f-40f they lose efficiency and to rely on another source for heat.

The Mr cool 12000 DTY unit says 5f . Freind of mine has two units and loves them. I do understand they may not be as efficient when cold but the price of oil is killing me..:)

There probably has been improvements since I installed them. I hope so, anyway.

But, lets face it, there's not much heat in 5f air for the heat pump to remove.

I have to mention considering a pellet stove too, it's still more affordable than electric, and Larry ( savemoney ) happens to be the most clever and creative on moving pellet bags!!! I can't say what will go higher in price but from what I hear it's electricity.

Yes I have thought about that also. I do no a good pellet stove is costly along with I'm guessing a bag of pellets a day anyway. Just thinking about it right now but will do something.

According to their own specs efficiency at 5ºF is 25% and is outputting about 5,000 BTU. Unless you have really cheap electric rates you're gonna want to switch to something a little more efficient at pumping out a little bit more than 5,000 BTU.
5,000 BTU at 5 degrees is still impressive though.
Used to be you'd have a heat pump switch to a back-up at 40ºF.

5,000 BTU will heat what, at best a 10x10 very well insulated room at 0ºF ?

Just measured in 4 different spots. 2 were 12" (windy at those spots all day long) and 2 were 16" (protected from the wind....on the cleared part of a power line).

So, I guess it is 16" of snowfall. Its wind blown out of the yard area by the lake where I measured 12"

We may get 1- or 2-inches coming Wed. I'm happy with that but we will get ours. :)

That is what I also have been told But not by anyone who has tried them as their only source of heat. I think even Energy Maine recommends another source of heat. I know of a landlord who has them in his apartments and that is all they have. If your home is really well built and insulated, they are outstanding. I'm watching my daily electric usage on the power companies web site. So far, no spikes. I would anticipate at least some spike. Pellets are at least $5.50 a day plus the power to run the stove. Not too hard to figure what we are spending. Best part is I have options. I am locked in on the gas price. I have pellets stacked high in the garage. And now the mini split. I have to tell you. There is nothing like wood heat. It is a lot of work, but wow it sure is comfortable and there is something very relaxing about watching the fire burn.

It is getting ridiculous and I’m sure the price of heating oil in January is going to really make me glad we have plenty of wood. The past few days oil went down, but it still is too high.

Well, we're getting wildwest 's wind tonight. It finally made its way here with gusts up to 50mph. We will go from a high of 57° Today down to 33° by morning. Not complaining after seeing the temps many are down to already.

A friend of mine wrote this poem...
    Sad but true...

    Twas The Night Before...

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house
Not a creature was sure what it was even about
The leaders were choosing their words with such care
No one could remember Jesus ever was there

The children said no prayers before snuggling in bed
The greed of the holidays danced in their heads
As mom worked the night shift, and dad was away
Fighting for his country, that had gone astray
When on the news there arose such an alarm
The news caster said “Christmas” and caused so much harm
To Facebook and Twitter people flew in a flash
To post their displeasure, the newsman to trash
As God looked down sadly on his children below
Wanting so badly His gifts to bestow
When what to His tear stained eyes should appear?
But a group whom upon His son’s birth loudly sneered.
As Satan led them, so charismatic and quick
Making them doubt God was just one of his tricks
They each sounded good, his tricks and his games
No one could see through them, as I called them by name,
Political Correctness, and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,
Make gay marriage legal, and abortion as well,
But don’t respect Christians, or say “Christ” at all
Cause if atheists hear it, they may be appalled!
And all over the world there was heard a great sigh,
Crashed economies and disasters causing loved ones to cry
Yet no one could fix it, because no one knew,
They could call upon Jesus and His angels too
And then, in a twinkling, it was Christmas Day
With people demanding we say “Holiday”
As I tried with my words to turn them around
To make them remember back when Jesus came down
He was dressed in swaddling clothes from His head to His feet
Laying down in a manger, this new world to meet
The gift of salvation He had come here to bring
Wise men gathered around Him as angels did sing
His eyes, how they twinkled, with love, peace and joy
This first Christmas gift for each girl and each boy
From out of God’s heart, pure love did flow
As He sent His Son down so we could be white as snow
A blink of his mom’s eye, and the turn of her head,
Her Baby was grown, and her heart filled with dread,
Jesus went about spreading the news on the Earth,
And was soon about doing His own Father’s work
Just thirty three years, and the whole time He knows,
He came here to die and on the third day arose
But they heard Him declare, before He left from their sight,
I AM coming back, it could be Christmas night!

Water dispenser on the refrgierator door wouldn't work this morning.

Ended up being a little piece of heat tape that had come undone from where it was supposed to be. All good now!

I was feeling a little parched, hahahaha!
