Took this 16" dbh elm down at the property today was trying out my new 4k come along winch. Shortly before getting rained out I decided to give some rounds a few whacks to humor myself. To my disappointment it split easily it was really wet and I could see water when the axe hit it fwiw. I think its american elm? But all the other american elm Ive had the axe bounced off and the wood just laughed at me. 20211205_145806.jpg 20211205_145942.jpg 20211205_145735.jpg 20211205_132841.jpg

Not doubting that it's elm, but split wood looks more like maple to me. I have had elm split just by looking at it, but others can be a mess.

Your thread title is an oxymoron. Right The Wood Wolverine

All kidding aside, the split reminds me of Norway maple, but bark looks elmish. Whatever it is, gotta love easy splitting firewood.

The inside looks a lot more maple then elm, but I have been wrong before.

My first thought looking at the grain that's not elm. I agree looks like a maple.

Thats why Im a bit baffled. Upon further research they appear to be slippery elm or European white elm not American elm like I thought.

I've had Elm that split like that too, usually a bit in a sheltered area. Good firewood, take the win & get all ya can.

I have a mess of Siberian Elm along my property line, most is tough to split by hand but I recall a few rounds being surprisingly easy. I also thought that stuff looked like maple but not the bark, never really seen elm that light in color before.

I had some elm limb wood about that size last year that I could split in one hit with the iso-core, when I got to the trunk... That wasn't a one hit split.

Yeah those 2 pieces were from the top of the trunk. Hopefully I didnt jinx it since the hydro is at our house and I won't be taking it to the property until the new build is done.
