Growing up (if it can be said that I did that) i saw my folks cook once on the Nashua, when the power was out.

Now, I wish to deprive big gas of my money in every way I can. Besides heating steadfastly with the Jotul f500, we have learned to cook on it as well. Its a little slower than the gas range. And needs to be 400*+ to get things cooking before the end of time.

Scrambling eggz has been successful. Tonight we made a fish chowder that was off the charts. We'd been out on a wood delivery, and were sufficiently chilled. That xhowder is really good if its rested on the stove top for a few hours, but we weren't in waiting mood.... simmered less than 2 hours. (And the gas company didnt get one red cent!!!)

So, best, favorite wood stove top recipes or experiences?

Reheating slices of pizza. Wrap pizza in foil. Put it on stove, crust down. When the foil on the top feels hot, its time to enjoy. The bottom crust crisps nicely. 10-15 mins. Better than microwave

Chicken broth. Chicken carcass in the pot with water. Leave it for hours.

So far, all Ive cooked on the stove is coffee in the percolator. I have toasted marshmallows on the coals a few times though.

We dont use the stove top much but I do grill over the coals quite often. These are some venison back straps about ready for consumption. [IMG]

Now thats a neat idea....cooking inside....I wonder if that could be adapted to bake in a dutch oven....it would have to be pretty cool...breads usually like 350*F.
Roasting marshmallows is also an interesting idea....

Chili. Stew. Are the two most common forms here. A pot of percolated coffee...WATCH OUT! That stuff is H.O.T. hot!

Used to toast any number of sandwiches I made by just flopping them onto the stove itself...then a flip. Makes for a nice warm sammy on a cold day!

I have heated on stove top but I can't really say I have " cooked " on top.
We do cook inside though. Foil packets ( hobo cooking ) usually work out pretty well. Great for baked potatoes and one of our favorites is chicken breast sliced up with peppers , onions , garlic and a little S&P. Easy chicken fajita style with nothing to clean up after.
Burgers also always seem to be pretty good as well. Although a burger is always good to me anyway.

It is sort of like we used to do when heating things to eat while driving truck. We'd simply put sandwiches and such on the manifold and drive for a while then eat.

I've not cooked on the stove but my wife used too. Here is a picture when she was making either applesauce or apple butter.

Our old Nashua has cooked tons of stuff inside and outside. A piece of aluminum foil and some cookie dough sure smells good. Dutch ovens with legs work great inside.

I have not seen it, but one of my guys had a cookbook for locomotive engineers, for cooking food in the engine compartment...seems temperature is steady, they list cooking times, either in time or miles. Sca

I've done mostly breakfast items but a few others too.

I used my infrared thermoter and shoot my burners on my cook top to get their temps and then shoot the top of the wood stove to find an area of similar temp.

So if the recipe says to put the pot on a burner set to medium for 20 minutes, I will set the cook top to medium for a couple minutes, get the temp then shoot the top of the wood stove and find a matching area.

I've got a nice little stove in my shop, and a bigger one in the house. One morning I decided to try out the shop stove, did bacon and eggs in my old cast iron skillet. Turned out great, when the power was out for almost a week, we did stew on the house stove. That took a little longer, but turned out great too.

Someone on this forum uses a small chunk of "I beam" standing on end in the stove with coals all around to support the cast iron pan. You can move the coals as needed to control the heat. Sorry i don't remember who the genius is.

Some great ideas here. I’ve only ever boiled a kettle for tea or coffee.
