Well and few weeks ago two stacks of wood fell over, (1) was 12'x16"x6' and the other 16'x16"x6'. I'm not sure but probably my poor stacking skills are to blame. So today I went at it and restacked my mess and generally cleaned up some tall grass and wood debris at the shop. It was good to get this done. Sorry no pics to protect the innocent.
I have a rule... I cut, split, and stack ONE time. If it falls, there it lies until I burn it, as long as its off the ground. I hate stacking once, I'm way too lazy to stack it twice.
I'm right Inbetween you guys, my stacks as 5' tall. And I've been close to having some stacks tip over. This year it was the concrete blocks on the ground, one side sunk into the earth more than normal this spring and 2 rows came with it.
I do mine at 5ft as well because one the wood is dry it ends up being about 4ft. I measured my racks based on 4ft heights... so a 3 cord rack might be something around 3.5 cords of green wood.
Those kinda look like mine. I cut a 10' 2x4 pt in half to make the ends and use 2- 12' 2x4's to make the bottoms. I use some old fence wire to join the tops of the end posts so they don't fall backwards. Air gets underneath and I make the rows about 12" apart.
A long time ago we started stacking all at 4 1/2' height. The only time we vary is when we move wood into the barn for what we'll burn during the winter. Some of that goes up to 7'. Not had a problem with that.
It is right now. I just finished putting on another coat of finish. It can stay there for now but will go back in the old shed after cider making or maybe I'll have our neighbor store it in his heated shed.
Looking forward to this years pictures. My wife enjoyed last years and then did not enjoy the price tag of that little gem. If it was any less expensive we would have one in our garage. btw, do you know Penny from WS?
For sure it was not cheap. We bought the plans and all the cast then used our own wood and tools. That saved a bunch and it was sort of fun doing. Next time you talk to Penny, ask her who Dennis is! For sure we know her and my wife still talks about the first time we visited Woodstock and Penny could see she was being a bit shy so grabbed hold of her. They made a great pair.
Penny is doing our artwork for the IS. Look forward to meeting some of these people I email but have no face to match it with.
If you go to their web site and scroll down to the bottom where it gives the phone number, you will see Mike Hartigan's picture. I'll try to point out a few others: Picture 1. Guy on the right is Tom Morrissey. Picture 2 was a whole bunch of people. That picture was taken at the end of an Open House and most people had left already. Here is a group of folks that gathered and all were members of another forum. Many will note that Ray is the second from left. Another one taken inside the shop. Here is Tom, the ornery one, an ugly guy and Brian (he was there to pick up his IS stove). The last one is a good picture of Tom and his winning stove. He got the $25,000 first prize in the contest. Notice the fish theme on that stove at the time (kept changing) but also notice that thing on the pipe. It was a light and it ran from the heat of the stove.
I recognize some of the folks from that gathering, all from the other forum at that time. I have met Ray, he is a wonderful guy. In the second to last pictures, what are the sweatshirts you guys are wearing?
