I retired the day I turned 55 and I'm 71 now. Money is a non issue as well. So long as I have enough squirreled away to go on my big game hunts, I'm all good.

I look at it as an expensive hobby. I do like not having a boss (other than my wife)...

I can do dogs (cats) but no beer. I'm a non drinking alcoholic. 37 yeas now. Prior to that I drank constantly.

I traded one vice for another. I smoke and have no intention of quitting. I chew too but only when not tractoring or driving the car. Too messy. Life is all about trade offs. If life was perfect none of us would have any vices, but we all do.

Back in the day, I'd buy a fifth of Smirnoff vodka, jump in the big truck and head off to Chicago to unload. On the way back, I'd stop at Harbor liquor in Burns Harbor and buy another bottle, go load at US Steel and head back. The trip out and back, I rarely remembered anything. Every week. Amazing I never wrecked, never got stopped, nothing and I was really loaded.

I think it started when I worked on the lakes boats as a fitter during winter layup. You had to drink your lunch or you'd freeze to death inside the boats. I'd get a magnum of Lambrusco for lunch to keep me warm. By 5, it was all gone (so was I actually). It paid fantastic so I always had a fat wallet. In the early 60's I was making over 20 bucks an hour plus overtime. Almost joined the Longshoreman's union and shipped out on a lakes boat once.

I worked on the Edmund Fitzgearled btw. She was always a leaker. If you didn't constantly pump her bilge, she'd scuttle herself. We were always doing hull plates on it.

Those were the days. I guess I'm really lucky in some ways, not so much in others, but I'm still kicking. Have had a lot of friends die. Seems like I only go to funerals now. Pretty soon, I suspect one will be mine. but until then, I live for the fun of being alive.
