For the larger coins, look on the side of the coin. If you see some amber color, that is a clad coin and it isn't 90% silver. I don't know what is in the collection but you could see some Franklin or ike dollars, Kennedy (halfs?)... everything pre 1964 should be 90% silver.

the other way to check for silver is the ring test. Drop a silver coin and it has a distinctly different sound than a copper nickel one. The only sound that makes my ears perk up more is a chain saw.

They have electric testers and scales that also help. In general, it is good to be skeptical about authenticity.

I have seen silver plated morgans on Alibaba for like 0.50 a coin. Then someone resells it on eBay for 56.

Lowest I paid for gas was 23.9 gal. Not too shabby for the area I was in...only "gas war" was between two gas staions in small town!

Bought a brand new V8 "Duster" for $2900 in '70.

Seldom will counterfeits have the correct weight so i use a jewelers scale when needed. If correct and still in question my 10x loupe will usually confirm it. Chinese counterfeits have flooded the market in the past couple decades. I can spot them from a mile away and still see ebayers auctioning them off. They dont like it when i tell them their "coin" is counterfeit.

I can remember seeing gas at .53c/gallon when i was a kid in the 1970's. Cheapest i paid had to be less than a dollar when i started driving in 1986.
Paid 18K for my 2001 F150. Drove it off the lot August 2001. Died Oct.2017

Not sure what cars nd coins have in common but...

I don't do coins. I do, do gold however as in solid gold. Have a bit of solid gold bars, a couple pounds to be exact. Price fluctuates a bit but overall, a good stable investment for the long haul. Not in a safe either, sitting out in plain sight but even if you looked at them you wouldn't see them. The best defense against theft is plain sight but not visible unless you know what you are looking at and where. Same applies to my guns. The gun safe is basically empty and unlocked.

I like the plain sight theft deterrent. Dont know if id do it with gold though.

Its common for threads to quickly get off topic here. Kind of the norm IME. :Yar:

Why have all your weapons in one place for some criminal to get them all when you can have them everywhere. Thieves like to be quick and not be searching. Searching equals apprehension or death.

Far as my gold goes, I'd be willing to bet you could look right at it and not see it. Even my wife don't know where it is, only me and I'll keep it that way.
