The Midwest, near the great lakes, doesn't have the elevation that Colorado has. Once you hit -20° it's just straight up cold.

It got pretty cold last night. It was at 16° outside when I went to sleep. 24° out now. Ash and elm in the stove.

Yes, small footprint but good output and the pipe can run 4 directions (either side, back, & top). Got a great deal on this one used. Only ran 1 season before new owners bought the home and converted to LP.

This one takes up to 24” splits.

    Coals raked forward
    [IMG]

New splits added. Max of about 4 medium splits.

Cold today... Was in the teens this morning and still hasn't got much above freezing. More soft maple in the boiler.

True. I’m not sure I could tell the difference between -20 and -60.

I was back country snowboarding near Steamboat a few years ago. I almost got myself in a bind. It was -18 degrees. You could have told me it was -100 and I would have believed you.

Oh you can, if you imagine the difference between 40 above and 0. -18 is getting close to the limit of being out by yourself. The old boys told me -30 was bottom temp to be out by yourself traveling any distance. I'm sure the AK guys will correct me if that's wrong.

My mom and dad grew up on farms in SD. My mom went to a country school. One room school house teaching grades 1-8. I asked her yesterday if school ever got canceled because of snow. She said no, but remembered the snow being so deep at times that the horses had to jump through it to pull the sleigh to school

    It's a learning thing.
I've gone to the woods alone at 40 to 50 below many times . Fall, limb and buck. Haul to the truck and load the truck . All by hand , with a powersaw a pulp hook and a snowgo and sled. Even done it with my old Terex frontend loader.
But, you HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE little AND the big things.
It's pretty rugged working hard in that kind of Cold. You get all sweated up. Your body heat and the outside cold drive all your sweat into the insulation of your outer layers where it freezes inside the outer shell then the ice keeps building back toward your body. I used to keep a complete change of clothes , from the skin out in my pickup. I've had to change long john shirts that had froze to my chest and back hair. That's not as bad as having your hat that is INSIDE your Northern Outfitters hardhat liner freeze to your hair. That blankety blank Hurts when you take your hat off. Gotta get dry gear on or your gonna die. Then still have to load the truck, get it out of the woods and deliver it to the customer. Then get home. I've delivered wood at 55 below at the end of the day. It's tough.
But, ya gotta be tough to live in Alaska

Oh , Cash . Trust me it's easy to tell the difference between 20 below and 60 below.
Easy to tell 20 below from 40 below.

Years ago, I was snowmachining in northern Michigan in -45(f) and paid dearly. I got a frostbitten face and hands. To this day, my face and hands are extremely sensitive to cold. Needless to say, I don't own any sleds anymore.

I really dislike winter in general, but I still have to maintain (plow the road and clear the drives on my rental properties), but I do it in the comfort of a cab tractor with heat and the AM/FM.

19 here and I just loaded large White Pine splits into the Wood Gun. There was a nice bed of coals from last nights load of Maple and Beech.

Yuk... I know it's coming (here) but I would prefer it don't. 26 here this am. 72 inside. I do need to go down the road and pick up a supersack of off grade corn today. Problem is, I'll have to use an open station tractor. My cab tractor is at the dealer for a 'tune up' and getting the electronics installed for the new bailer I bought a month ago. Probably freeze my buns off....
