So Ive removed a few bigger cherry and white oaks from our future home site. I saved a couple saw logs do I need to do anything special to them? They probably wont be milled for 6 months to a year fwiw.
The best is to elevate them off the ground get the ends sealed as soon as possible ( I use anchor seal ) I also cover logs with a lumber tarp it is a shade cloth like a mesh it keeps the direct sun off the logs . The logs i cover are the ones for long term storage or the ones that go bad quick JB
In addition to buckeye's question... How about the bark on some species, should it be removed? I've also read that any old latex paint on the ends will help in a pinch. ?
Most of the time as the drying process begins the bark will fall off ,trying to remove sometimes is difficult and when you want the live edge look you do not want to gouge the edge while trying to remove with tools. Old exterior latex paint works pretty well I started out using paint then I got a sample of anchor seal at a seminar on drying and it works better and also holds up longer to the weather JB
