This makes me want to pick up my hoarding pace a little. Not in an entrepreneurial sense, but I know a few good people that have stoves or fireplaces in their homes. If times continue to get harder, it would be nice to be in a better position to help someone else out. I’d rather give someone a cord of dry wood for little to nothing, than to see them get hosed buying green wood at a premium and smoke out the neighborhood (like some neighbor of mine did last night)
Unfortunately it also means that we must keep a better eye on our 'hoards' as this type of event brings out the entrepreneurs (thieves) and the desperate. I remember during a harsh winter in my state (not specifically related to the high cost of heating fuel) when firewood thefts were on the rise. A lot was stolen from vacation homes however there were many brazen thefts of firewood from occupied dwellings (someone even made multiple trips and stole seven cords!). Just food for thought, especially for those who store extra hoards at locations away from their primary domicile. Not too worried about it here but I may throw up a couple extra solar motion-activated security lights for peace of mind. i hope they dont burn pine! I wonder if they will get stuck with the generally crappy partly dried cordwood a lot of guys sell as "seasoned" and the general uninformed burning population seems to accept as normal??? Ive seen lots of folks gung ho about heating with wood and eventually realize making your own firewood is a lot of HARD work and often abandon it. Unless you turn into one of the "sick" individuals that make up that vast majority of the members here...myself included.
Its a frightening thought if you pick up your hoarding pace! For a good reason though. Was it the guy next door burning oak?
I don’t believe so. I heard his wife is afraid of the fireplace. I think the culprit is on the next street up from me. This guy took a large Norway maple down about 3 months ago, left all the chunks on his front lawn, and threw a tarp on it.
So you think he is burning, or trying to burn that? Its worse here. My landlord took down some oaks a few weeks ago. CS and brought them into his basement to burn. Son says the stove will dry them out. Unbelievable! Ive decided to give him nuggets as im tired of trying to store and sell them.
Yeah reasonably sure it’s him anyway. The guy across the street from me burns but he’s halfway smart about good practices. There’s a neighbor behind me that also burns (the kid I scored the silver maple with last month) but again, I know what he has is at least somewhat dry. I hear you about the oak. I can tell sometimes when someone is burning wet oak. It smells kind of sour to me. Good on you for giving him the uglies.
Seems like a really fair price. I’d probably spend close to that on fuel, just cruising from one hoarding spot to another to get 20 cord. Especially pulling my tandem axle trailer.
If people are that desperate, why not just steal everything? Grills, patio chairs, flower pots, garden hoses, trailers, house numbers... the possibilities are endless!
