I have a Lotta firewood that I need to stack so that it will dry. Most of it is oak some sour wood and other mixes of hardwood. anybody use pallets for stacking?
Sure do. Have access to plenty of them. Sometimes ill use them for ends rather than cribbing. Sometimes ill prop them up on 4x4s, cement blocks, bricks etc for better air flow plus being higher its makes it easier on my aging back and prevents rot to the pallet. Notice the 4x4 under the pallet
Plus your supply goes out to the year 3000, so you have to be careful about the pallets rotting before you can use the wood up
Plastic pallets would be ideal. In 3+ years of seasoning most pallets are mess to clean up. I scored some guard rail that I’ve been using that I like. But the main thing is separation from the ground.
Have I ever mentioned I dislike pallets? I tried some once and hated them. i would much rather cut a couple saplings in the woods, lay 2 of them down and stack on them. Right now I even have some good sized pine logs I'm stacking on. Even have a few old wood fence posts. Landscape timbers too. Anything but pallets!
Wooden pallets are good… oak wood pallets are better… but moved onto plastic pallets… so far have been happy with them. Only time will tell.
I’ve only got 3 plastic pallets that I scrounged and can’t seem to find any more. It’s funny you mention the guardrail. Back in the summer they were replacing several miles of it along the highway here and every day I’d drive by wishing I could stop and inquire about the old stuff. It does look perfect for stacking single rows on. Railroad track looks good too but I don’t know how to go about purchasing that.
My preferred stackind would be on: 1-4x4 PT (but the cost now is sky high) 2-wooden pallets 3-Plastic Pallets-I like these the least because they tend to sag and make the stacks unstable.
