Picked up three truck loads of oak rounds. About 20 minute drive from my place but worth it as oak is rare here and it sells for over $600/cord. They posted with the address but it was last night, right before dark, so I was hoping I would have a good chance of some still being there if I was up early. I was out there and loading at 630am in the dark. Directly on the road, straight grain cut to 16-17". No one had touched it. Made two trips early then a third when I was passing through town around noon. The tree company had come back through and chopped the rounds into quarters on my third pass, I pretty much got it all. Feels like Christmas. I'm no expert on oak, any guesses as to what kind of oak this is?
I process white oak a lot and can’t recall ever seeing a dark core, but sometimes my memory is short. IMO white oak bark is distinct with it’s big gray scales/flakes. Younger white oaks can be kind of like Ash.
Definitely oak, but reddish brown heartwood is synonymous with red oak of some sort. Dont know the exact variety as dont know what is native to the PNW. Great for you JH. Id be just as happy and even happier getting it all!
Son of a gun, youre right. Just looked it up. I wouldve gone all in on the bark being red oak and the heartwood too. Although the bark pics looked different on google. Still learning new stuff here.
