I am getting a new stove with a glass front next year so I thought I would get a bundle of birch to try. It’s just starting to snow here and have been working on cutting and stacking with a fire going. The wood is from this year sometime but after testing it it’s between 19 and 22% so next year will be good. The skid measurements are 4’x7’ 4’tall so not bad for one bundle. I did got one hard wood bundle to but next spring I will get that cut up just need to figure out what top covering I’m going to use before I drag it out.
I have burnt slab a few times but it has been a few years. There is a spot about 10 miles from me that was just logged a few months ago and they now have a sign up for free slab. I have access to so much regular hardwood that I just can't do it.
Nic Nice! Easy handling stuff. The only slab wood ive got was from buzz-saw's mill. Soft and hardwoods.
Slabs are a good option if you're short on better stuff. They burn fast, but tend to be dry. They will season fast.
Hmm...might hafta see if my brother wants to hitch up the Ford mule train n go for a ride...any idea what species they were cutting?
Not sure on species other than I believe by the trees I can see in that area I would guess cherry and maple were involved.
If you are going to check it out. Rt 30 into East Canton then straight through both lights, turns into rt 172. About two city blocks watch for the sign on the right. They have ties laid out to drive back on. I have never drove back to check it out.
What I've found is that most folks who burn slab wood usually gets enough for a year then goes back to regular firewood. But slabs can be good during shoulder seasons.
I have about 8-10 cords of locust slabwood piled up I was getting 50.00 a cord loaded on customers trailer the people who are regulars love it I just have no time to process it all ( Too busy making it running the mill ) . It is pouring rain here today but I will post a picture if anybody is interested . The slabwood I have is a mix of sizes cutting black locust ,it always has a odd shape so you get a lot of larger slabs also i put the edger trimmings in the pile so you get kindling it is a good mix JB
There's an ad somewhat close to me where the guy is selling slab wood at $20 per visit (year round)! A guy with a long trailer wood make out good there. My dad used slab wood a couple times that I can remember as a kid. I have memories of cutting it to stove length.
Don't bother if you were thinking of making the trip. They setup and ground the slabs that were left.
