Here you can fight, yes they dismiss you, then you appeal. I had to do this when they did our county wide reassessment. The assessors basically doubled the price of the house in the three years that I bought it out of foreclosure They priced it the same as a new build across the street. But if you read the complete breakdown they only gave me 3% depreciation on the value of the house. I went to the town assessor with a Check for the depreciation, $16,000. I went with pictures told him, I need: a new roof, new windows, new plumbing, new floor coverings, new kitchen, new siding and electrical. Go make my house new and barn and garage ohh they have to be brought to new code too !! good luck. He agrees went from 125% increase to 8% increase
Yes, any thing that is prepared. It you get a roasted chicken at the grocery store or a slice o pizza or gas station sandwich.
I can't understand this yearly car registration tax thing. Pa has a 6% sales tax on vehicles. It's a one time payment. Of course there's a yearly registration like anywhere else that's $50-200 depending on weight class.
Yes but the fee goes down as the value of your vehicle depreciates yearly. Oh and you register on your birth month. Wife and I are same month1500$ charge happy birthday!
My thing is, i dont like paying taxes any more than the next guy, but understand that it's how the system works. Streets need repaired, schools need funded, and the like. But holee crapp, at some point i want to retire and not be taxed out of existence! My wife shouldn't have to sell the house if i die because she cant pay the taxes. At some point, we're all gonna be on a "fixed" income.
If i buy (and can afford) a car this year, i shouldn't be paying tax on it in 10 years! Hech, even the car manufacturers know your car will be worthless in 7 years. There's no way i should still be paying taxes on a 10 year old car!
I get it and I’m same boat. My property taxes show break down $650 a year for town, roads fire no police force $4,650 for school.. YES it’s a great pre-K to 8 th grade school. Our Junior, in high school, town I live in, pays 17,350 a year for a high school kid
That brings up another point...Kids... I don't have any, why do i pay the same as someone who has kids? Lets make it a little more fair. Say. Howabout we all pay a property value based flat school tax and those with the kids pay a per child tax also. Wouldn't that be a fair system?
I agree but Tax Code is not fair!! that’s why half people in US get more back then they pay in. real wealthy pay lobbyist and get breaks. the hard working get “spanked” for being good and not knowing rules.. but hey we get chainsaws
Yeah, i get it, but thats income based tax. School tax is based on property value. I edited my post above for clarity.
I'm happy to be able to keep things in perspective for you. The last time my property taxes were under $3,000 was 18 years ago! My recently retired father in law lives 30 miles north of Pittsburgh PA and is in rough shape. The wife wants to pack up and move out that way so she can be there for him. I'm not too crazy about Butler county PA but looking around that little piece of West Virginia that juts up between Ohio and Pennsylvania... looks decent from where I'm standing. In my line of work I'm limited to working in or near cities if I want to get paid more than burger flipping wages. Youngstown Ohio and Pittsburgh aren't too far from there...
Growing up in RI, I would hear my dad call Massachusetts, Taxachusetts. In 2007 before everything crashed we were looking to move up there as my job moved to our corporate offices. The price of homes were inline with where I live, but the PT's were on average $1000 less than where I live, and they had far more services than we have. Our last PT was $6240. This year they maxed out the increase at 4%. They have been doing that the past couple of years. Our school system pays one of the highest per student levels in the state at over $23K/student, and they cry each year it's not enough. We also have a steadily declining student body of about 8%. They are getting a saving from the reduced students, but still need the max 4%. What services do my PT get me? Town water that I receive a quarterly bill based on usage. VFD which I was a captain for 11 years. An undersized paid rescue department that is staffed with paramedics (much higher cost than EMTs.) You have to pay for trash removal or take your trash to the transfer station and pay a fee per bag. The town beach costs $35/year.(good luck getting a parking spot.). They have gotten better with repaving the roads in town. For a longtime, there was no schedule. Plowing of snow is hit or miss. For me I don't care so much about the plowing. We get very little for our high taxes. Oh if you didn't get from my rant on the schools, 75% of our PT goes to the school system. Our town loves to play games which I bet all of them do. They will tell you they are lowering taxes per $1000 right after an evaluation. The last time they did that, they increased the value of our home $50k to $431k. I would not get that much as the town allows a garage across the street to operate as a junkyard devaluing my home. It's been a constant battle with the owner for over 4 decades from my parents to now me. Currently they charge us $14.45/1000 on the house. I get a veterans assessment credit of $14,880 which results in a $215 tax credit. Cars are taxed at $18.71/1000 with a $3000 deduction pro-rated at 365 days. This does not include sales tax rate of 7% and crazy fees for just about everything under the sun in RI. Oh and currently if you are a trucker going through the smallest state in the union, you get hit with a bunch of toll both gantries. Which the truckers union has sued the state saying the state cannot just target the truckers for tolls. We all knew when they put up the reported $1mil per tollbooth gantry that at some point it would include passenger cars. They did a similar thing with seatbelts in this state. They put the seatbelt law up for voting and it was shot down. That did not stop the state from enacting a seatbelt law with no fines for 10 years, and then without any further vote or discussion fines were put in place. Jason from RI
That might have came down from the federal government. No seat belt law, no federal funding for interstates. It's for the good of the children...
