Vehicle Excise tax isnt really a killer tax in Mass but the taxes you are paying on your property and dwelling seem kinda high.
The trade off is money Brian, the salaries are higher in Boston and points north and south of the city. In my wife's case she needs to be here to get the decent paycheck.
Yes, I understand. I went to school in Philly for 4 years and lived in South Jersey across the Ben Franklin bridge. For many years I thought the drivers on the Schuylkill Expressway and in South Jersey were the worst, most aggressive and obnoxious drivers in the country. I was disabused of this silly notion the first time I drove through Connecticut and Massacheusettes.
It is really scary when talking about property taxes. Yet, some spots aren't bad. In our case, I bought a house and 1 1/4 acres before we got married and the taxes were around $35 per year. Today we live on a bit over 40 acres and pay around $700. But I know of some who have only about an acre and pay $5,000 or more... But then, they live close to a city too. We live 10+ miles from a village and also on a dead end gravel road. It is worth being further out away from the cities.
I have to agre with you. We have plenty of that going on here. No wonder we have one of the highest insurance rates in the country.
1800' house, detached garage, pool & decking on 4acres -$480, 7 acres woods $190, <1acre woods across driveway $92.\ Vehicle registration isn't bad ~300 on two newer vehicles and old truck 10% sales tax - they make up for it somewhere(state 4%, County 4%, 2% local cities) No roads to plow or fix from the freeze thaw cycle is a huge chunk of municipal budgets, school budgets are another fickle matter best not discussed here
No complaints here. 2400 sq ft on 2.3 acres with a shed, and my property taxes are about 2k per year. I'm 5 miles out of town, so no water or sewer or sidewalks or streetlights or cable, but the road is well maintained and plowed decently enough in the wintertime. They're even repaving my road this summer, and I really didn't think it was that bad yet. No complaints, although it could be a bit wider. Not quite a full two lane road. School taxes come out of the paycheck, and I'd just prefer to avoid looking at that number. I used to live in Buffalo. NYS know how to tax people
About $2000 on 8 acres. House, shop and 2 large toolsheds. It would be double that if I hadn't had "words" with the assessor (my cousin) !!! This county is close to if not the poorest county in NYS. Making a living here is tough. Services are minimal to moderate. Roads are literally falling apart. Havent seen a newly blacktopped road in 8+ years. So far this spring I've yet to see a pothole patched. Income and sales tax are high. I have an exit plan from this chithole.
Been there, done that. As bad as it is, New England is worse (i.e., Connecticut and Massacheusettes.)
well lets see 8k to Hanover, 5+k to Brockton for my plant, 2.1K for OB harbor cottage. best deal on re tx in Mass on cape and islands. lot of vacation homes and retirees, lowers the tax drain. the tax never ever goes down it never stops rising.
My folks place in East Falmouth is a small fraction of my stepfathers 2family in Belmont - that sucker has a tax bill that nearly equals my annual mortgage
im next to belmont and its nuts the schools are in the top 3 in the state there are always overrides for that but the tax rate is crazy the town is out of control people buy homes for half a million tear them down and build one and a half million dollar homes ( 3 on my street in the last 2 years ) its sad to watch an excavator drive through a perfectly good home because its not big enough but i figure in less than 10 years ill be in nh or possibly maine
Another Ohioan here, was living in Gahanna for most of my 20's in a smallish bi-level (a little over 1,000 sqft maybe with 2 car garage part of the first level) with maybe 15' on each side of the house and 40-50' front a backyards and over 2k in taxes. On my 30th birthday I purchased a home about 45minutes outside the city, rural Morrow County. Now I pay a little under 2k but have 2.5X larger house, 40x40 pole barn garage, and 2.2 acres. Sure the town doesn't have any million dollar water water scultptures to maintain or really anything, but I prefer it that way. 2 acres was very nice after the small city lot, and it has the privacy and feel of a much larger place since I have fields/pasture on ALL sides with only the neighbors barn at the corner of my property (and blocking the view of my only neighbors house). I can sit on my front porch and watch the sunset over fields and trees that going hundreds of yards into the distance without seeing any houses or anything manmade except for my road. That's what I like! I have a few friends who live in the city (I work downtown), some in pay 6 grand+ per year. I couldn't imagine forking out 500 bucks a month just for the privilege to own a home in a particular area. Then again I have no desire to live in that area anyhow so I guess I'm biased. I mean a lot of us here put ourselves through a lot of hard work just to save $500 on heating for an entire winter! (Oh for many of us its probably even more, but still). One thing my property has not is woods. I really want to have my own woods large enough to be self supporting for firewood, perhaps some timber for woodworking, hunting deer and turkey, and enough cleared land for some large gardens and orchards and maybe chicken and turkey, etc. I don't mind downsizing the house, since separating from my wife I don't need 3k sqft to find a hiding spot any more lol. I've actually been looking in NY of all places for a nice quiet woodsy setting on the cheap (originally from NY) and found so many places the blew away what I could find in rural Ohio actually! Taxes werent bad either! Must have been the particular town I was looking at because I know most of the state is $$$. But keeping in my 60 mile radius of Albany, to find a job similar to what I have in Columbus, I found lots and lots of 25-100 acre lots, for a small fraction of what they would go for here and also a few homes that would be big enough for me and 50+ acres for what I paid for 2! And the same taxes too (minus the school tax, that's separate in NY and I don't know how much it is but probably doubles it). Still I was shocked at what I could find. I'd have already moved if it wasn't for my son still in elementary here. No, I'll likely need to wait until he's on his own before I move out of the area. Wish I could take him with me but its 50/50. Its going to take a long time to get the orchards and berry bushes and vines, trees, etc growing and bearing fruit. I hate to have to wait another 10 yrs to even start.
How much of the $4500 goes towards the 22 acres rather than the house? Crazy as it sounds I was actually thinking of moving to the Albany area but the property taxes are giving me heart burn .
You have got to be kidding - I did not realize the post was over 5 years old but I still can't believe it went up that much. I thought NY had some kind of 2% cap per year. I was looking at the Scholharie area.
Yeah, less then .25 of an acre, modest 50 year old house 1500sqft, and a shed. $4600.00+. *EDIT*. And, my sewer bill yearly is $465.00 and Water is average $300.00 every 3 months
