Cleaning up around the stacks and processing area today. Splitting mostly. When I came across some of this stuff that I had forgot about. I scored it late last summer I think. Came out of a mixed and jumbled pile of trees, logs and brush destined to be burned over the winter. I thought was going to be a good score, Not! So I grabbed some of the easy stuff, barely 1/2 of a short bed pickup. There was some elm in there also. But I have no idea what this is. Iirc I think they had already tried to burn it some. And I took pictures that also showed the leaves but I don’t have them anymore. Very heavy and dense it seems. And the fresh split sap wood has a yellowish almost green tint. 9A2CDCFD-ED94-4884-9619-3357AFB39746.jpeg 880384B9-C308-44C3-BD9E-8E758DAA4A8E.jpeg 5FEE435F-AF12-427A-B605-6F799BC54A15.jpeg 9DEEFEC4-7174-40B5-855D-D8E9348B7986.jpeg 031EC8E1-BA7F-4753-A833-8843CD4D24E0.jpeg 2FF63672-B6B8-44C7-A08C-3590FF8A1177.jpeg C209C58E-34D4-4C0F-9FFA-2C0F3B299285.jpeg

It’s nothing like any elm that I have ever touched ( and I’ve had plenty )
Leaves were different, color, density, smell, bark, all different. Stringy splitting is the only similarity, and even that is different. Pieces without bark have a different texture also

Looks an awful lot like the American Elm we deal with here in IA.

The white rings in the bark on the one end grain pic and the bark says American Elm to me(as Eric Schamell already mentioned). Good thing you have a hydo splitter!

Bark, light colored sapwood, and strands/spots in the heartwood remind me of hickory. (Upon further review)

While hickory is stringy, I've never had it tear up that bad. That is reserved for 2 species, gum and elm.
