Thought I'll ask this in this kubota thread. Hopefully wont and not trying to hijack it. So Im thinking about getting a tractor. Kubota on my short list.
I have 5 acres. Majority woods and thick brush
Not looking to mow with it, so don't think need mid pto. (?)
Looking for help clearing land, maintain gravel lane, snow removal, garden work, and of course help with firewood processing.
Convince me I don't need one.... you bunch of enablers.

Oh you wouldn't want a tractor, I mean, why would you get something that lets you get all that work done in a reasonable amount of time? Much better to drag all those jobs out over many weeks and lets of grunting, sweating, and swearing. "builds character"

Some of those tasks are straightforward, real question is how much will you be around your house? Bigger tractors like the L-series will be more likely to rut up the yard. Something like a bx/b/lx would be right up your alley assuming you don't have tasks that demand X horsepower at the PTO or a certain lifting capacity (like lifting logs onto a wood mill or round bales).

Land clearing is doable depending on the work, a tractor isn't a great digging tool (go for an excavator for digging stumps) but can deal with small saplings/brush.

Found a couple today bigger than the grapple. Glad we added 2 hooks on the frame and had the big tongs. 1103210905.jpg

It's time to start cutting them where they are found instead of moving them. :handshake: That thing is huge!

As a Kioti owner, I won't hijack this thread. However, I also have five acres with four being heavily wooded. When I purchased my first tractor back in 2012, I was looking small and reasonable based off my acreage (I don't mow with it either). I wanted something to help with snow removal, working the property, firewood processing, road maintenance, helping friends/neighbors, etc. One piece of advice the dealership rep gave me was that you should always get a tractor at least one size larger than you think you need. I did so, and ended up with a 27-horse with a backhoe. The first job I used it for, moving some large rocks to make room for a new parking area, made me already wish I had gone larger than the 27-horse. That tractor served me well until a couple years ago when I upgraded to a 42-horse (didn't get the backhoe but did get the front-mounted snow blower). There are times I wish I had gone even higher in horsepower. Once you get a tractor, although you won't use it every day, you will always find things to do with it. And it will make wood processing so much easier (in addition to all the other tasks you can accomplish).

As for tractor brands, I was mostly familiar with Kubota as that was what I had used for years on the demolition ranges. When I set out to purchase one, I stopped by the Kioti dealer first (based on a recommendation from a retired forest service heavy equipment operator). I haven't regretted the decision. Take a realistic look at what you intend to use the tractor for, add in some 'what if' scenarios, and then shop around for the best brand to fit your needs/budget. One thing to remember based on the last couple years is that the supply chain for tractors is horrible across all brands. Its's been very tough for most dealerships to even get tractors in stock, never mind parts and implements, so take that into consideration. It may even be a good time to purchase an older model (aside from the benefits of being pre-emission) because they are easier to maintain and you can scour places like eBay for parts. Plus if you decide you don't really need a tractor (as if), you won't be out as much $$ and it will be easier to flip.

    Keep us posted.

Tractors, I really never heard about someone wanting smaller and less HP. One's first tractor really is just a "gateway tractor" and only leads to the "harder" bigger and more HP tractor.
I started as an innocent youth with a modest 20 something horsepower, now completely in the grip of this addiction at 95Hp - jonesing for about 120hp
    :D
