Small town hardware store in Brush Colorado is apparently a Makita dealer. Never seen a shelf of new makitas, they had some blue stuff also

seems like a pretty good price on a 60cc saw.
Is that a pro saw or all they all the same

Dolmar was bought out years ago by makita, that’s when they lost the Sachs name. That 6100 is a good saw. I’ve got a few Dolmar from over the years. A 112, 115i, couple 6400s one of which is branded makita and a 7900. Those are all pro saws. I don’t know how the lineup is nowadays for homeowners vs pro.

6100 Makita is a pro saw. Magnesium cases. A buddy of mine bought one last fall. Nice saw and lighter than my dolkita 6421.

Take a good look. And buy now if you want one. Makita is out of the gas OPE business in early 2022.

I too had a 6100. Unfortunately I didn't get to run it much, already had 50 & 70 cc ported saws, and needed to downsize for a move. So I gifted it to an Uncle who put it to good work taking care of his family and my grandparents' place.

That's too bad. I was admiring a 7900 Makita in a saw shop in Fairbanks. Seems like a good looking saw if a guy could get it with a full wrap handlebar.
Not that I need another saw in that size. But it looked like a saw Ide like to try. But if they are going to quit making them . No sense.

I'd say that 7900 is a still a solid buy. These series of saws are popular enough that they will have a following and enough support for a long time. There's full wrap handles for these saws.

Eventually I'll turn my 6421 into a 7900/ 85cc saw. It just runs so well as it is. No need to.

Can still get parts for popular saws that were last sold 30+ years ago. (Homelite/McCullough) Maybe not on every corner, but if you still have one you bought for personal use….

7900 is one of the most popular Dolmars/Makitas out there, for good reason. If you want one, I say get one before they are gone.

They look a lot like the Solo I had years ago.
I think the one I had was an 8100 or something. It was a good strong saw as far as power and speed go. And very light weight.
It's downfall was the maincase where the bar studs were anchored wasn't up to the stress of running a 36" bar.
I'm so used to Shihl and Husky pro saws. And the amount of force they can take.
    The Solo couldn't take that.
    I forget where I got it . Bailey's I think.

These particular makitas are really dolmars and very stout. Mine was made in Germany, I think all of these series are.

Sachs-Dolmar 166 is one of the kings in the muscle saw category. 118 cc, I've ran one and they are impressive.

A friend had a couple/few of the 166s . He used them for milling with his Alaska Mill. He ran them for a few Decades . Litterly.
Another guy I knew had milled with 090s then got a 166 and said the 166 was better for milling with a long bar. Plus they didn't vibrate nearly as much. I guess they had a Long stroke that made for a better power band for milling.
My friend milled many thousands of feet of lumber with his. He had it down pat. Made very nice lumber.
I cut timber with a 143 Sachs Dolmar one day when I was being interviewed for a write up in Timber Faller magazine. Part of the Loggers World mags.
Nice strong saw. Didn't give up any performance to the 056 Mag 2s.
But the handle bars weren't all thet skookum.
I thinned trees and cut firewood with the 116 and 119 SD. And a SD 100 was the only saw that I ever had stolen from me. It was a nice tiny climbing saw. I really liked it up in small trees. I also had a 50 cc Makita which was a SD that I thinned trees with. Nice little saw. But the oiler supply hose was not protected well enough so was prone to getting destroyed. Which Really Sucked the last day I thinned with it. I was cutting about 1,000 feet above the spur road where my 4 wheeler was parked. I had my pistol on but the saw was broke down. I had a brown bear shadow me all the way down to my 4 whlr. Where I had my 416 Taylor. Bears aren't scared of the engine noise. But they Really don't like the noise or something about the chain going around the bar . It was in the fall and I'de worked late trying to get the top corner of this unit done. So it was getting dusky by the time the saw crapped out. This was on Chichagof Is in 94 or 95
It's odd that 2 times that I had a bear shadow me or not get out of the way , I had broke down Sachs Dollar's in my hands.
The other time was a big black bear sow with 2 little cubs. This was on Moss Is. , Sumner Straits in 84. The SD 116 I was running seized up . I think it was under filtered and sucked a bunch of sawdust thru the filter. Or someone sugared my saw gas.

    I guess I'm getting older.
A lot of things get forgotten or stored in some far away part of the brain.

I've had a number/ many times I've been shadowed by brown bear walking out of my strip in the afternoons.
Once I got my first 480 Ruger, I stopped letting brown bear push me around when all I had was a handgun on me. That was in 02 I think. 8 Fathom Bight, Chichagof Is.
In the Northeast Chichagof Controlled Use Area.
Densest brown bear population in North America.

Oh, u got one. I want to get one.

Please hurry and get it out and use it a bunch. Report back. Pretty please !!
ACTUALLY it would be my wife's. She wants a chainsaw. And almost All my carpenter tools are 18 volt Makita or 18x2 Makita.

Including the 12" dual sliding compound 18x2 miter saw. Which cost an insane amount of muny !

Open it, you'll enjoy it. I've had one for almost a year and a half. Its my go to for one handed limbing. Saves me from bending over more than i have too. Keep the scrench around to open the oil reservoir as I can't seem to get the lid off with my hands. 2 or 3 batteries and your all set. Pretty dang quiet and definitely light weight. Doesn't have the power of gas, but like most tools they all have a place.

What amp hour are your batteries ? Or said another way, how long does it run on a 3 ah or a 5 ah battery. Doing small brushing and pruning ?

I have a Dolmar 5100s and a Makita 6421 that I swapped in an OEM 7900 p&c into. Love them both but no dealers around so all parts are mail order and that can be tricky. Would definitely not go with Dolmar/Makita if I only had one saw for that reason.

I use 5 amp hour batteries. Typically cut a few, haul to the pile or trailer then go back, cut a few more haul them out and so on and so forth. Id say 1 to 2 hours that way. Assuming most things are 2" or smaller. It'll cut anything you want it to, but not quickly. The larger diameter stuff just bogs it down enough to stop it.
